A conversation that regularly comes up down the pub or work colleagues is that they support the usual Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea Liverpool etc and a few are fanatic to say the least tattoos etc. Now basically tonight ill go down the pub to watch England play, however in the pub England doesn’t really go down well (I’m Welsh). Huge cheers will echo if Croatia scores tonight. Now what gets me and I nearly got into hot water last time when I stated how hypocritical everyone was in the pub, for example Gerrard is on the ball and he getting abuse shouted out in the pub from the same fans that support Liverpool week in week out. Now ill quiet happily support England tonight, any why Shouldn’t I, but I have to do silent cheers or it’s a beaten for me. How hypocritical can people be?

your one of a kind, most of the Scottish and Welsh on this forum are exactly how you said! I honestly don't get it, if you lot were to do well then i would support you! Its just a childish thing they have against England really! Also, this should probably be in the sports forum ;)

I find it funy that I HAVE to support england cozthey are part of the UK. Well I dont I Support Scotland thats it I have no feelings for any other national team whatsoever. Its like getting an Arsenal fan to support Spurs in Europe it wont happen. Get over it I wont support england I also wont support anoyone playing them I really dont care about them.

It depends what you mean by 'support'. Most people don't actively support any team other than their own.

I do know a few people up here who would always cheer on whoever is playing against England, but I also know just as many people with the opposite attitude.

I'll happily support England (or any other home nations) at most sports. Sure if I've got any English mates watching the game then I might have some banter about supporting the other team. And most of my mates would do the same. But I'd always prefer to see a home nation win, rather than lose.

For example, I'll never be gutted if England lose, but if they've played well I'd be a bit dissapointed. I would rarely take pleasure in seeing them lose to anyone other than Scotland though. Unless they were beaten by a sporting minnow - big teams losing to minnows always carries some comedy value!

When Scotland are playing England my support is as firmly behind Scotland as anyone. But I don't understand the type of people who genuinely dislike other home nations to an extent where they will 'support' the opposition. Fortunately those sort of people seem to be a minority, albeit a vocal minority.

There are times when my support for teams (other than Scotland) can be tested. Sometimes things like blatant biased commentating, or overly annoying fans can just hack me off!

div0, you sound like the only person I've found in this city who won't be supporting Croatia tonight :p All of my friends included.

It is a bit harsh really, I was behind Scotland last weekend and felt gutted when they went out. Then again, I'm part English, part Scottish, born in England, uni up here...guess I can't be too one sided :)

That said, I tend to support any of the home nations in internationals. I agree on the commentating though, that wound me right up in the Austria game...I'm now off on a mission to get my essay done and seek out a pub where I wont get lynched :p

You reckon? Most of the Scots on here that I've seen have quite clearly stated they don't give a stuff what England do or do not do, we've had our own little Euro dream to follow and mighty entertaining it has been as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure some people do care but the vast majority I know of aren't all that interested about Englands (or any other national teams) results except for the potential to take the mickey. I know that is the only reason I'm paying any attention at all to the scores tonight.

I would note however that condescending comments like "Its (sic) just a childish thing they have against England really!" are a good way to annoy even those who don't dislike the English.

Why is it the Scots more than anyone else go out of there way to let everyone know they don't support England. They have a mighty chip on there shoulder.

Call it even because I don't support that woolly mammoth haircut needing moody tennis player you have.

Comments like 'This is the best night of my life!!!! I nearly cried when Croatia scored.' make me lol. Its a sad state of affairs when happiness hinges on another country losing at something. Get a job or preoccupy yourself with something worth while.

Unfortunately this goes both ways. I went to the pub to see the England match and after they'd lost, I said 'this Euro is going to be lonely without England' (hell can you imagine a Euro without England in it?) and the guys turned around and said 'what the **** do you care, you're ******* French!'

I swear the fans take the game even more seriously than the players do :p

We werent good enough to qualify neither were you live with it.

It's a good job I don't really follow football. Maybe it's just the media who go up Scotland always asking them if they support England.
