My mum's kitchen got flooded by washing machine long term leak, ending in burst pipe.

Insurance company will cover it and there's £250 excess to pay.

Is it normal to pay that money to the assigned contractor firm before they will do anything?

I'd always thought the insurance company will do all the financial side and that excess fee is paid to them on completion of job , then they square up with the contractor....

Any experience? I've never had to do a claim. Touch the proverbial wood.

yep this is normally the case as far as the two claims I've had worked. Just make sure you detail 100% of damages and it will get sorted.

Yeah I was told to pay the contractor when my utility roof went through my neighbours roof , cancelled in the end ,my neighbour did the repairs (I helped him and did mine) and I just paid for afew slates and sticks all stuff under 30 quid (unnecessary info )

I will tell her a majority of random people on the internet say this may be the case.....
