I waiting to upgrade to zen 4 but I am now thinking about waiting until amd offer 3D cache version of the chip.
In the meantime I completely forgot that my motherboard supports other coffee lake CPUs including the 8 core 9700k.

Do you think it's a worthwhile upgrade over the 8700k with all 6 cores running at 4.7ghz?

Some games I have noticed putting a lot of pressure on my now dating 6 cores. Spiderman forget at 4k uses 90% of my CPu making me CPu bottleneck another title is hunt showdown that also suffers performance drops that a friend of mine doesn't experience on ryzen with a weaker GPU.

If you're only using 90% CPU I'm not sure that you're actually bottlenecked by your CPU in Spiderman. That would be the case if you were using 100% CPU.

As for waiting for the 3D cache versions of the Ryzen CPUs, I'm with you all the way.

GPU clocks and usage drops when the CPu is under stress. It's not all the time mind you. But in some areas the performance drops below 60fps.

The 9700K doesn't support HT, so you'd actually be losing threads, how much more is a 9900?
Clocks being equal a 9700k is a better gaming CPU than a 9900k.

I've shown years ago that in many instances those 'fake' threads actually hinder performance in many application and games.

It's is much better to have 8 real cores than 6 real ones and 6 'fake' ones.

Intel really pulled the wool with HT which is only mainly beneficial when all the real cores are fully maxed out 100% of the time. Though outside of that scenario (i.e. most games and apps) then much more often than not people are better off without HT. (In this regard SMT is implemented a bit better)

@shankly1985 what is your memory speed and timing?
PS. My 9700k plays Spiderman buttery smoothly and without a hitch at both 1440p and 4k, though I'd still advise you save your money for now and to clock your 8700k as high as it will go on 1.3v-1.35v and tune that memory to help improve frame times.

Hello
My timings are 16,18,18,36, 560 clocks 2T
This is the default XMP profile for this RAM at 3200mhz
Yeah those are pretty lose timings. Gamers Nexus did a video a few years ago that showed how much of an improvement in frame time (perceived as smothness while playing the game) can be had by tuning the memory and reducing the latency.

Buildzoid I believe has done some good videos on tuning memory on Z370/Z390 which should get you off to a good start. (Also on overclocking Coffee Lake CPU's if I remember correctly).

A 13600k on a cheap B660 or Z690 while reusing your current DDR4 seems like the most cost effective option to get modern top end performance.
