I was going to put this into this business and moment, but figured I'd slap it in it's own thread. You might be thinking, "How does one accidentally do something like this?"

Well, let me start at the beginning.

It's approaching Christmas and as an expat (immigrant if you will) I miss cadburys chocolate. We get Milka, similar but not the same. We can't really get cadburys here, or many Christmas things we actually miss. (mince pies, selection boxes, crackers etc)

I bought 12 advent calendars on amazon for about 40 EUROs shipped. I looked at individual ones, but 5 of those was more inc shipping. I needed 5 (one for each of me, wife and 3 kids) and had 7 spare.

As with all areas we have 2 local buy and sell groups that are very active. I told my wife I was going to sell the other 7 for 10er each. She said I was stupid.

I put up the post and in a matter of a few hours, I had not only sold the 7 I had but I could have sold at least 50. So I quickly went on amazon and bought more and selection boxes too. I had now spent about 150 EUR total. People picked up the 7, and in a few days I'd got back all the money put in and had a nice pile of stock.
I figured I must be able to get it cheaper than amazon, so asked a friend in the UK if I could order from Tesco to his and arrange a courier. I spent 150 EUR at tesco and in total 45 on a courier. I was now in for 345 EUR.
My tesco shop was crackers, mince pies, calendars (on offer for 1quid, selling for 10...) and selection boxes.

I am just getting to the end of that haul and arranging collections. The last few people are arranging collections at the moment. I should be clear by the weekend, but still have people asking for more crackers so might have to do one last cracker shipment. (buy for 3 sell for 10, so not as much a mark up but damn good even factoring in shipping).

I didn't mean for this to happen. I just couldn't help it. I don't need the money (it's nice, sure, it'll go in my lambo fund that the wife won't let me use my salary for :P ) but it's not even about the money for me. I just love the whole part of it. Each sale just gives me that great feeling.

In total I should clear gross of about 2k, costs as mentioned were so far 345 and I'll chuck my mate 100 for his boxing up in the UK, so 445 in costs and 1555 profit (for my time).
Again, really not about the money. My time is really (as a contractor anyway) worth more than this but it's just something I really love.

It also goes to show that there are many opportunities out there. Things that pop up when you don't even think about it. If I was in a worse off position, this could have really saved my Christmas. It could for anyone.

So here we are, a lady is picking up 4 mince pie boxes and 4 advent calendars later. One guy picking up 2 calendars and the US is off at work for thanksgiving and so I thought I'd share my little tale of that time I accidentally started a small seasonal venture.

Easter will be coming up soon... :D

It would be prudent to diversify your supply chain. Having all your eggs (or crackers in this instance) in one basket is a recipe for disaster. I'd be happy to consult and provide an alternative supply chain for a modest fee of £85.

Plus, opening a supply chain operation in Scotland which will no doubt be soon joining the European Union seems a prudent, future proofing, move. Shall my people speak with your people?

This does remind me of the time I met my brother in Bangkok late in November. He was living in Siem Reap at the time. It was unusual for my brother to spend both time and money to fly to a different country to see me. Upon sitting with a beer on Khaosan Road the real reason for his travels became clear. He had worked out that he could fly to Bangkok, go to Tesco Lotus and buy their entire stock of Santa hats, fly back and sell them for profit. Even better that I was there, as I could help transport a number of hats for him. A santa mule, perhaps.

So, that's what we did. We filled an entire trolley of santa hats (I recall he paid the equivalent of 3 for a USD) and a packet of bin liners. We spent that night on Khason Road selling the hats to the people selling us the tat. We made 100% profit that night. But more was to come. Ultimately we returned to Siem Reap, him getting on the plane with a checked bin bag of santa hats and a bin bag of santa hats as carry on. My rucksack was filled to the brim with more santa hats, as was my carry on. He managed to sell the majority of the hats for 1 USD each. All in, he made a small profit.

So you can see I have vast experience and I'd be very suited to being a business partner.

lol noted. You clearly have experience in this area and would be an asset to any type of business.

Haha now you mention bangkok, my sister lives out there. I wonder if I could get her involved and ship things out there for her expat group :D

I love this! It's just great fun and I love the challenge. One day I want to do the same thing as that guy did where he started with I think it was $1000 and bought something with it, and ended up trading up all around the world. Bought a huge raw uncut gem as one of them, took it to get made into a statue and sold it for like 5x the cost. Did deals on timber from south america, bought tequilla in mexico and traded it. Wine from South Africa etc. all from that $1000 start money.

Out of tiny acorns massive oaks do grow. ;)

I need to make a decision on how to use this pot now. I have c.2.5k and ultimately need to get it to about 55k to buy the cheapest Gallardo I could pick up :P There is no use in leaving it cash, does nothing. I could; a. take the lot and chuck it into one strategy (trading most likely, a friend of mine has been working on this area for about 4yrs now and has a really nice strategy to play long and shorts), or go more hands on... I could do a market I know pretty well, watches. I could pick up a deal at 1.5k sell on for 2-2.5k depending on right deal.
I could also look at cheap cars here. Pick up a bargain for the money with the aim to selling on. All have their risks of course. I suppose it's all about looking for the right next move.

My uncle in Nigeria is trying to move a lot of gold to the UK, if you send me the 2.5K now it will help with the costs and I'll pay you back 50K, do we have a deal ? He will even throw in some free tbalets that will help your johnson to grow............................

You've got a very high margin, low risk opportunity laid in front of you and you're talking about dealing watches and cars... Bruh :p

There must be a Christmas wholesaler somewhere that you could buy at trade rates.

If I were you:
  • Set up a shopify (or similar) store ~£30 p/m
  • Hire a van
  • Drive to nearest Bookers/Makro/Costco from the Chunnel
  • Load up
  • Head home and set up a tidy little e-commerce site selling UK foods/gifts and the like

Exactly, why bother increasing the risks, if it ain't broke, don't fix it :D

I've dabbled a few times in buying and selling over the years, and found it good fun. Once I lose interest in the product I tend to get bored and stop though. If it's not fun, I can't get into it.

This is the sort of deal I can get behind.

While you are correct, the fact is, I don't think this market has the size I would like and obviously is very seasonal. Will I do it again next year? Most likely. I'll find a really cheap way of getting it over and will sort things out a bit more but market is limited by it's size round here so scalability is then limited. I reckon I could make another 1k for easter off this sort of model, but I don't believe it would get passed that sort of level of income generation.

A Gallardo owner on this forum just so happens to have one going for sale ;)

Haha I do love yours, it's a beauty. But as below... by the time I've saved up 55k for it, I think I can pick one up for that from Germany (also LHD would be helpful). Germany seems to give me the best prices on them compared to both france and the UK. Not that I've looked.... weekly... :D

He 'only' wants to pay 55k though... :p

Nothing like a stupidly high mileage supercar for your first :P

True, but seeing as you've likely got a name for yourself within the expat community you could likely expand to non-seasonal stuff. Probably nowhere near as simple but still, the fact that you have built it pretty much without trying suggests there might be many other untapped opportunities. I do appreciate the scaling factor though, less than £10 profit on an advent calendar is nice but it's still only less than £10 per sale, and high volume stuff is impossible for individuals without some sort of dropshipping.
