I found my AOE2 Conquerors disc, and now I'm craving AOE2, so I thought I'd reinstall it, but I can't for the life of me find my Age Of Kings disc.

Am I allowed to download the game (;)), seeing as I have the original (I have the box, the manual etc.)

If you have bought it originally, afaik, you own the game and therefore can copy it for backup purposes or download the iso image/whatever.

As long as its the same game and you're not downloading an expansion pack or something cheeky like that :).

If you own it, don't worry about it, imo.

I always assumed it was the CD key that was the important bit. The CD just has the same files which everyone else has.

I'm probably wrong tho.

Morally speaking perhaps. Legally speaking no. You're not allowed to make your own backup from existing media, let alone download it from the internet.

I'm telling on you! just you wait! the microsoft SWAT team will be knocking on your door and coming down your chimney before you can say "Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate! Yar - har - fiddle-dee-dee, being a pirate is all right with me!"

Plus, assuming you are downloading from a torrent, you are also simultaneoulsy uploading it to hundreds of other people, which certainly is not legal!

I torrent all the time cause in recent times games are literally not worth the price tag.

If a demo or a little play on the game impresses me I'll buy it.

Demigod being a prime example :)

Don't see the problem tbh, you have the CD key and that is pretty much what you pay for.

Not sure if it is legal, but you're downloading a game you technically already have, and you have a legit CD key for it, so I don't see why not. It's not like you're hurting their sales, considering how long it's been out, can you even buy it any more?

Its the uploading that they convict on when prosecuting through torrent usage.

My friend got done for exactly the same thing. Couldn't find his disk, downloaded it througha torrent. Got a court summons for £2.5k because of the number of people he connected to for upload.

Shens. Done by who exactly? Wasn't aware the industry was persuing individual file sharers? Even if they were, you'd have to be the unluckiest person on the planet to get done for one offence.

I was thinking the very same thing. The odds are about the same as getting hit by a bus.

Be aware that if you use a torrent site and are called up on it by davenport they won't give a crap that you already own the game. They will demand their fine for the seeding of the file to other people, not you for downloading it.

A law firm was hired last year by certain publishers to chase down and fine individual torrent downloaders. They received a letter demanding a huge fine (£300+ usually) or if they didn't pay were threatened with a law suit for tens of thousands. Thousands of people were targeted last year, iirc even a few people from these very forums received the letters.

Not sure about other programs, but in uTorrent you can go into preferences - bandwidth, and tell it to limit "number of upload slots" and "maximum number of connected peers per torrent" to 0. That way, it shouldn't upload to anyone (in theory, I haven't tested this). Note that it WILL reduce download speeds though.

Usenet > Torrents.

News servers ( for a good one anyways, my isp's free one removes files after 3 days grrr) = costs
Private torrent site = free

Free>Pay
Therefore Torrents>Usenet :p

OP:

Legally no, Morally yeah. I wouldn't worry, I lost my age of kings cd twice now ( well not properly lost the 2nd yet but I cba to search for it now), I have bought 2 retail copy's both for high price so I think I'm more than entitled to download it as I please tbh.
