My dad kindly gave me his 600 Fazer last autumn, after I needed to find transport asap.

I haven't owned a bike for about 4 years after selling my Gixer 750, and tbh forgot that it needed basic maintenance. I been cleaning it fairly regularly (every couple weeks) and always make sure that the chains lubed up etc.

But for the past week or so, the bikes handling through corners has be dangerously bad. The back end moving about quite badly, even when corning at relatively slow speeds. Inflation wise the tyres 'looked' ok, so I blamed the interesting handling on the fact the tyre was starting to square off.

Yesterday decided to develope some common sense, so I bought a foot pump & tyre pressure guage to check the pressures.

Haynes manual:

Front Tyre: 32 PSI
Rear Tyre: 36 PSI

My bike:
Front Tyre: 26 PSI
Rear Tyre 3.5 PSI (Yes, that is NOT a typo).

  :o

The pressures are now correct, the ride to work this morning was a tad better to say the least.

Yes I have learnt that I need to do a few basics checks, yes I am an idiot, and no it won't happen again.

3.5 PSI.....jeeeeez :D

:o:o how the hell did you stay on the road lol, if my rear tyre is 1psi out i feel as if my back wheel is going to slide out lol.

Never ridden a bike, but in a car you can normally tell if it's a few PSI out! On a pedal bike you can always tell, surely it must have almost been falling off the rim with that little pressure!

Seriously, to look at the tyre it looked to be inflated quite normally.

On my car you can tell easily if it's lost air.

I still can't believe it had only 3.5 PSI, I mean that's just absurd!

My mum had the same, she was riding home, back end felt weird, stopped looked at tyre and pushed it felt quite hard, got home she had 3psi in it aswell but that was due to a nail stuck in it lol.

Here's why. You say the tyre is squaring off. It's probably worn all pointy from being under inflated but because it's so flat it looked like it was going square :D

Sounds to me like you don't perform a simple walk around check of the bike prior to getting onto it.

I trust this is no longer the case!

Similar thing happend with my mates bike, his tyre didnt actually look that flat but when we got to the petrol station to fill it up it was also under 5psi.

Did you not notice when you sat on it the bike felt a little lower than normal? :D

haha good job you caught that one when you did, could have been nasty. I did something similar ages ago when riding my dads bike. The handling was awful and since I wasn't used to the bike I just put it down to that. It was a week later when I checked the tire pressures that the problem was very low pressure in the rear tire. :o
