I am now poor :(

I thinks its more that Sony could easily make it more efficient and therefore quieter and using less power that grates me.

why? thats exactly what they are doing with the 40gb. the rsx has already been moved to 65nm, the cell is supposed to be moving in a few months. come on give them some credit, they've done that in a year - we are still waiting for MS to do it:)

They could do it with less cpu grunt on the 60gb, the 40gb is marginally more efficient - it can be done in 45w and silently as my imac and many standalone player prove. The 360 is a non starter as a media player so i dont care what they do, after all they do not go to the same desperate lenghts Sony do to sell the machine as a media player - note the latest PS3 ads do not even mention or show games at all.

The basic fact here is Sony have an awful machine with the wrong graphics card that has to use brute force to do anything, remember it also uses 175w to upscale a standard DVD.

They also have not done it in a year as the architecture is older than the 360, it was heavily delayed by blu ray standards not being settled and changing gfx chip late into its development. The killer blow for Cell was when apple dumped it for intel x86 stating power per watt - that was a huge loss for IBM and a nail in the coffin for cell and only Sony using it has kept the very poor architecture alive. The 40gb uses a fraction less power, it can't even match the 5 year old G5 based architecture (360)that is hideously un-efficient let alone the best intel have at the moment.

So when Sony can get a machine to do it quietly, with very low power consumption and not pumping out more heat than the sun i will give them credit. As they have the wrong architecture i fear it will not happen until the PS4.

I think perhaps you should be sending your CV off to Sony to be head of project management.

You clearly know more than they do.
ummm...............

Send your off to be head of bum licking maybe ?

It is well known that 5 years ago Cell was full of potential, however times change and power per watt is vastly more important than huge parallel processing abilities using huge amounts of power - Cell missed the market and if you have a read on it you can find out lots more.

No sound like someone who knows for absolutely sure 100% what they are talking about.
Like I said, if you know what went wrong, get on the blower and make life better for everyone and stop something like this happening again.

I can afford not to have to lick bottoms.

Go save us all from bad consoles.

I havnt read so much tripe in a while. Shimmyhill who rattled your cage and sorry what graphics card are you using at the moment, how silent, warm and power hungry is that? your being quite a twit arnt you :)

Regards recent comments...

Most projectors operate at 30+DB and chances are thats louder than the PS3 anyways.
Putting lesser operating wattage down as a bonus to buy a standlone player, ffs get real as if you really give a ....

James hit the nail on the head when a better standlone player arrives im sure loads of people will get them. The point and what were saying is that the PS3 still is the best allround player, true its not suited to everyone but its the best at this time when considering everything. You wont find discs not working properly on the PS3, you get the full 1080/24 and all for a a lot less than the cost of a basic standalone.

Calling it a toy is stupid its not far off becoming a great platform alternative to a HTPC

dont put out statements like "why the hell would someone buy a Blu Ray machine over the PS3 "
As for a toy, all the kids at my daughters school want them, and in 3-4 years 90% of PS3s will be in kids bedrooms.
Yes it is a much better piece of kit than Sony have produced for the Toy and Game market before, but we had exactly the same scenario when the PS2 was released, the early adopters thought it was a great piece of home AV kit for the living room, and got wacked by Sony with their imfamous price drops.
£130 lost already, and theres only 3 films I would have wanted to watch on Blu-ray. Prices for standalones will come down, the Toshiba HDDVD is now £189 with 13 free movies :p

90% of kids also want a large screen LCD or plasma' in there room ,does mean that large screen TV's are also toys ???

£130 price drop for the PS3 looks very small compared to the price drops of must large screen LCD & plasma TV's people have bought to use there PS3/xbox360/HD-DVD/blu-ray players on...

Playstation is the number 1 brand, how does that compare to LCDs and Plasmas? you havnt spoke to (dont have) school age kids do you?
Nintendo Ds and Playstation 2/3 are the only words that come out their mouths when you talk to them about toys and video games, half of the lads my daughter knows didnt know what an xbox360 was last year and earlier parts of this year (aged 10).

Good point, but Playstation has been sold in three different economical climates and Sony did the dirty with price every time, whereas Microsoft virtually issued and appology and free goods to the people who paid the wrong price for their first machine.
Nobody knew for sure that LCD panels would become so cheap, the likes of Sony used to price fix CRTs for years, TVs have never been cheaper and you get a whole lot more.

Also your point isnt so good when you realise that LCDs and Plasmas worked as promised when you turned them on for the first time, the PS3 has not been as good as promised, low frame rates, no 1080P for games, jerkyness, slow loading times etc.

What Sony have done with Blu-Ray is not helpful to the consumer like their recent statements imply. But hey, the PS3 is a great quality player and the earlier adopter loves it, so who cares right?

I will say this, the PS2 sucked as a DVD player.

PS3 doesnt suck as a BD player so your example is way off.
Call it what you want. The $1000 top of the range Pioneer player is slower in operation and practically no better in picture quality from what a friend could tell on his 50" plasma screen. I can only take his word on this as hes now selling the player as he was shocked by how good the PS3 was.

What your forgetting is WHY the PS3 is such a good player and its simple PS3 is Sonys best way to sell the technology and in doing so not only keeps Blu Ray as a future format but also supports the Playstation Console Brand.

Its a win/win situation for Sony.

For me ive just bought the latest LG Blu-Ray burner including HD-DVD playback which will be my other source of HD playback but personally it was a better option than buying a Toshiba standalone HD DVD drive, and it was cheaper too.

I may have gone off on one but while the PS3 does an admirable job the way it gets there is poorly executed, it could use less of its cpu grunt to do the same job is all.

My PS3 gets louder than my Sky HD box, the Sky HD box noise i can live with but the ps3 is just slightly too noisy to not be silent in the quiet moments of films. If Sony just worked a bit harder i am sure they could do it in less watts consumed and therefore quieter - yes i dont really care about the cost of watching a film but only the noise.

I recommend the OP has a look near the end of this thread from Avforums.

http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=600514

People have been having issues with the 875 including judder from some sources and Onkyo have decided to update the firmware on custommers units to solve the problems. Units that have been sent out recently should now have the new firmware and you should be able to tell if yours has this by looking for the letter P before the serial nunber or barcode on the box.

I am considering buying one of these myself after christmas so am very interested to here what you think of it.
