I am studying bookkeeping, thoughts?

Seems almost as pointless as my friend who is studying to do an MA in librarianship this year and seems to think she is going to be paid £50k+ a year. Hmm...

Information Management in the oil and gas industry is all the rage at the moment with the operators..particularly Total and BP. Not unrealistic earnings after some years, particularly as contractor.

You will need to learn SAGE and will need to visit your clients. Most book-keepers are based on recomendation from accountants who don't want to do book-keeping themselves however increasingly accountants do want the book-keeping work as they can outsource on one of the online book-keeping packages where the client can log on at any time and get upto date figures which gives the client an extra incentive to stay with that accountant. The online packages are generally co-branded to look like the accountants own kit etc...

Also the clients will force you down on hours, they will want it done as quickly as possible and drive you down and will end up losing out if you take longer than they think is reasonable. You will also get clients who don't want you doing the manual keying, they will get a general admin person who they employ, or a family member etc and just want you to do balance sheet reconciliations and VAT. You can easily end up with 20 clients (which will be VERY difficult to reach) but who only need you for 1 or 2 days per qtr

Fox is correct on this one book-keepers are typically ~ £18K upto ~£25K from my experience.

Just do the Accountancy training with a local firm or one of the big ones. You get paid reasonably well during your training (as much as you would earn as a book keeper) and then you can earn big money at the end of it doing easy work somewhere else.

And how would one go about this.

I have searched google but no such luck so far.

Searching for accountancy trainee etc....graduate accountant training etc..

Jesus christ dude. Yes, you have a HUGE motivation problem. Instead of looking for the easy way out, actually do something about it! Work in small steps, do things you 'don't enjoy' very little at a time and increase the time as you go. You'll slowly find yourself feeling motivated as you'll feel that you've actually 'done' something.

Life is no easy ride, fix your damn problems.

If you get bored easy and have no self motivation then not really worth considering bookkeeping as a career, even if it is short term.

I agree with this.

But that aside, I think bookkeeping is a fantastic home based self employed business which offers a good flexible lifestyle.

There are plenty of small businesses who will use a self employed bookkeeper and it can easily be done remotely online.

My old bookkeeper lived about 400 miles away.

I'm not sure you sound suited to it though compboyo.

in fact accoutns may not even be that easy to get into either

''I graduated from a Scottish uni in June with a 2:1 in Accounting & Law and prior to graduating, starting from the September I applied for over 80 graduate schemes both in Scotland and down south.

I had maybe 10 interviews for these positions and 1 second interview with no success and through out finishing my degree I kept applying for positions with no luck. However, things were not so bad at this point as I was in paid employment (part time cleaning job and have previously worked in retail). ''

wtf!!!

Individual Experience may vary.

People with good qualifications may screwed upon time to time.
People without any qualifications may get the chance to study for CIMA by there employers.

However qualifications increase your chances, it is not a certainty.

In fact I think I would like to start my own tv interview show.

Like Mrs Merton but obviously Im a guy. but Im funny and I look funny. I could make like a spoof interview show like Alan Partidge did and I could get famous people on the show and ask them silly things and make them do silly things. And at the end of the show I could play a song with my band.

but how would I get this job? Should I propose to BBC/Itv my plan and then do a rehersal

Yeah.

After watching Breaking Bad the only form of book keeping I can imagine these days is the kind that cooks them.

If you do that, we should talk ¬_¬

Totally legit!

serious? or you being saracastic? That would be good a job that allows travel is nice. And they want English speakers?

No I was being serious.

You hire someone local to the client to tool around gathering the paperwork, which then gets PDF'd to India/Malaysia/Phillipines wherever. All the "work" is done offshore by people on a 6p an hour rate, they PDF the results back. Local bloke prints results out and delivers them to client.

There's plenty of degrees available offshore that are specifically focussed on Accounting & Tax law for specific countries - and cram the students with whatever it is they need to know to pass local qualifications and be an accredited book keeper.
