I am trying to write a novel, could do with some help?

I've had a "novel" idea in my mind for a while now, and was wondering a few things; firstly how long did you take to plan and research it? Did you find that when you started writing it just flowed out of you, or did you discover that you really needed a lot of planning to get it right? Did you do a lot of reading of similar books to yours before writing?
