i game on my tv and saw the new deals for the 980ti . I assume however that as i only game at 1080p that this is overkill. I just bought a r9 290 and i have overclocked it past reference r9 290x speeds so can play witcher 3 on ultra at 55 fps.

Its only overkill if you think its overkill. Some people want 60fps on ultra at all times. If I had 1080 and the money for a 980ti, I would.

You'll get higher FPS, but at 1080p not sure its worth it over your current card, but if you got the money and want to future proof why not :) maybe worth waiting few days to see what the AMD Fury x benchmarks are aswell.

I use two @ 2560 x 1080 . ( do use DSR where appropriate horsepower is left ) for some games enough is never enough so to speak . I just love blissfully high framerates and eye candy .

For some max settings involves maxing out anything they can find - which may include supersampling, DSR etc (or even a combo of the two, eek!) so even at 1080p plenty people are really trying to drive 4k+ :p

I'd say a 980Ti is significant overkill personally.

Also use 1080p. Like to use DSR from 4K or in game resolution scaling where available. Gotta 980Ti on pre order. I personally think Tri SLI 980Ti/Titan X is overkill for 1440p but each to their own. Playing GTA5 through with 4K DSR and FXAA was beautiful, glad I resisted the PS3 and PS4 versions.

Depends on how much money you got really :p A Porsche is overkill for roads where the speed limit is 30MPH too...

As said in another thread. Nope. Just bought one for 1920x1080 (120hz). Certainly not overkill.
Will buy another along with a 2560x1440 GSync monitor in the near future.

Ive got a 980ti and game on a 1080p 120hz screen i don't find it overkill tbh in some games maxed out it even drops below 60 fps but as others have said it's a great card loving mine.

it does really depend on what you are going to play...

i have just downloaded a game - Ark Survival evolved. its a pretty demanding game but it is only in alpha atm and it struggles to get me 30fps at 1080p with a gtx 970.

Just to add another opinion - I had a 980 clocked at 1520Mhz and in The Witcher 3 I could not acheive a steady 60fps. Over the next year games will become more and more demanding and something of a 980ti's caliber will be required for 1080/60+ should you desire the highest settings.

I now have a 980ti on order and a FuryX on backup in my mind :D

This has been discussed time and time again: there's no such thing as "overkill" when games are so poorly optimised and feature so much gimmick stuff that even a Titan X becomes borderline at mere 1080p. It can only be overkill from a financial standpoint as everyone has a different opinion on what is reasonable money to spend for what is basically a toy. And these toys are ridiculously expensive nowadays.

Remember that mods can also change the situation greatly, so it might be overkill in general but you can still access situations where you will want that extra power. Plus, with DSR now, I can't see how it would ever go to waste.
