Bear with me chaps, its a long story so far, but suffice to say I wish I hadn't bought my car.

2 months ago I drove my Leon Tdi FR out of the dealership in Essex and 80 miles home. A week later I started to notice an annoying issue with the gears and clutch. Quite often the car would still be in 1st gear even with the clutch down, the car wouldn't come out of gear until I literally force it out. Often a struggle to get the stick into 1st and reverse.

I called the dealer and he tells me to bring the car down and he'll get his gearbox specialist down the road to look at it for me - so after 2 x 180 mile round trips and after picking the car up a week later, the problem is still there.

So - after some negotiation I arrange for my local garage to have a look at the gearbox, they are reasonably confident it is a gear selector issue and the cables need replacing, this won't be a cheap fix - around £450. The Dealership then disputes with me wether the warranty will cover this as they state that nothing is actually broken - the problem is down to 'wear and tear'.

Eventually we agree that they will cover the lion's share of the fix, £300 and I'll pay the remaining amount - £150. I've just picked the car up and the problem is still there, even worse now :(

I really don't know what to do now, the garage who did the work are saying its now likely to be a gearbox strip and possible replacement - £1000 +

:(

Could be more of a clutch issue than a gearbox issue. Whats the biting point on the on the clutch feel like ? really low?
Is it hard to change gears when you are up to speed, say 3rd to 4th ect?

If so it could be a leaking slave cylinder or air in the hydraulic system.

Tell the garage you bought it off under the sale of goods act the car is not fit for purpose. You will allow them 3 attemps to perminantly fix the issue before demanding a refund within your rights.

Copy in local papers and speak to TS or whoever deals with this stuff. Try getting in contact with the top of the dealer, MD, HO or whoever it may be.

above 1st gear, everything is fine. The problem is most noticeable when crawling along in 1st gear and then coming to a stop- ie in traffic, clutch down, then a second later I can hear the engine revs change as it appears to engage in gear (this is with the clutch fully down) So I'm on the footbrake, clutch down, car is partially in gear somehow and I can't pull the gearstick out of first gear without forcing it out of gear.

2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th . 6th gear, no problem - the problem is with 1st and reverse.

Dealer is Central Cars - Essex.

How about going into gear? When cold?

I had a very similar issue when I first bought my Mondeo except it wouldn't quite crawl along. Ford diagnosed it as clutch drag and replaced the clutch under warranty.

It does not matter what the warranty says. You have had it a week before the fault, so they must fix it.

These money saving diesel things are good fun eh?

Yes, because this wouldn't of happened if it had a petrol engine:p

Yep, laugh a minute.

Have you actually asked them what they intend to do?

At this point, no, simply down to the fact that its a matter of hours since I got the car back. I'll be on the phone to them tomorrow first thing.

Cold / warm - no difference. Vehicle had a new clutch fitted a year ago though.

Well before you drive yourself mad, ask them to put it right and see what they say.

This is blatantly a clutch issue. No surprise that two separate places were clueless and/or were trying to rip you off though.

Get the clutch hydraulics bled first, it's the cheapest possible fault.

What the actual issue is isn't your problem - either the garage needs to fix it or they need to give you your money back.

Bit late on the mad front, but yeah I'll do that, thanks fella :)

That'll be the conversation tomorrow, indeed.

Thanks mate - useful info there :)

That was my initial thought, but surely if its clutch related it it would affect all the gears?

Dont think im being unfeeling here, but dont worry whats wrong, just get it back to them.

Dont even make suggestions, just ask them to fix it.
