I bought this...

I have a 306gti 6 and that too has a self adjusting clutch cable so I'd think Pug would keep things along the same line. Just watch out as on the 306 the adjuster gets hot and the grease dries out causing the clutch to feel stiffer than it already is (quite a stiff clutch anyway) though I am unsure if the 106 suffers from this.

Also on the 306 they fitted a seperate spring to stiffen the clutch even more (again not sure if this is on the 106) but removing this helps make the clutch feel a lot lot smoother.

I would say stiff and short movement means new clutch too. Mine is getting on a bit now and the bite point is getting quite high :( That will be another £300 when it finally goes!

Nice car though, very chuck aroundable, loves to be revved :D Maybe think you payed a little to much, I payed £4000 for a phase3 (1999) 306 gti6 with 50k on it, but then I think I got a little lucky at the time. Lets just hope you dont get an attack of the electrical gremlins, its the only thing I dont like about my car.

Saxo definately has to be adjusted, as does my mates 106 gti. Bit weird that yours is self adjusting Burned_Alive

I'm fairly sure I paid £200-£300 too much over the odds - but it is in lovely nick. Ordinarily I would have haggled but I wasn't in a position to haggle [edited out the reason, sorry!], and for the sake of a couple of hundred quid, I'm not complaining!

Sorry to bump an old thread - but better than starting a new one. But I travelled up there with my GF in her FTO to collect it this afternoon, 4 hours each way...!

First impressions:

Quicker than I was expecting, by a fair way! The engine's got some zing to it, and pulls pretty strongly right the way round to as far as I was prepared to take it on a first drive (6krpm or so - i'm aware that there's more to come). I was expecting it to sort of OK in a straight line, and that it would come into it's own around the bends, but it's geniunely pretty quick on the straight. Held it's own against the FTO on the way back.

Handles as well, if not better that I was expecting too. After driving the boat (cavalier) for two years, anything would have been an improvement, but I'm stunned. Not a hint of understeer, back end felt alive around the corners. Even though it's lowered 40mm (perhaps a little too far, especially at the back), the ride wasn't crashy or bouncy at all. Just very planted and grippy. Lots of feedback through the wheel too. Doesn't seem to like standing water tooo much - I took it very easy through the rainstorm around Birmingham this evening at about 6pm!

Seats felt good, perhaps a little lacking in lumbar support. Maybe I'll try the base of the seat forward a notch, and the seat reclined a notch more. I'm quite fussy about the seating position in cars. That said, I found the cramped (some say offset pedals) fine. Not uncomfortable at all. Leather interior is really nice, has a nice ambience to it. And there are no squeaks and rattles from the interior or dash either, hoorah!

All in all - very chuffed. Shame I've been out the house since 8:45am this morning, and am completely knackered, else I'd have gone out for a drive!

Enfield, I only just spotted your question much earlier in the thread. I work in some of the primary/secondary schools on the north/west side of basingstoke, teaching music to kids :)

I test drove a 106 when I still had the 19 and impressions were:

Handling was good, didn't seem any better than the 19 but seeing as that was good anyway that's not bad thing :) But then I only had a chance to fling it around some roundabouts in Plymouth.

Engine was nice as well, again nothing better than the 19 but just felt the same. Again this is no bad thing at all,

If it had a bit mroe kit, mainly air con really, I'd have loved one, very nice little cars :)

I'm sure you'll love it, now go scare some bigger machines and scoff at the fact you're getting much better mpg than them whilst keeping up :) :)

Oi thats my car

edit: just realised yours has the bumper strips colour coded

It might be your car, the bumper strips were colour coded by the owner I bought it off, and he owned it from mid 2004 IIRC, with only one previous owner from new.

The plate is T***RWT. Coincidence if it is your old car!

Edited to add a couple of pics:

Do you think the rear is sitting slightly too low down?

The 8v was in the pre-facelift 1.6 XSi, which in turn followed the original 1.4 XSi. Think the 1.6 8v was about 102.

Or the S2 Rallye with approx 110bhp ;) But think he was reffering to the 2001-onwards Saxo VTR's ;)

Good, I do too! Does anyone have any experience on how much it will cost to get the torsion bar raised a notch or so to get it looking a bit better?

had my old saxo lowered 40mm at the back and it was no way as low as your gti is. Looks around 50-60 to me

My old saxo:

Cost me £170 for mine to be lowered with shocks and springs with the torsion bar matched the same. So prolly £80ish ? (very rough guess)

Well, the front has been lowered 40mm on (40mm spax springs), and the rear torsion bar "adjusted to match". By that, I assume it means "adjusted so the sill sits level". Which looks odd, as Pugs have some positive rake angle do they not?

Roughly £80 isn't too bad, I shall enquire down the local indy garage when I get it booked in this week for a full service and look over.

The rear certainly looks too low. That'll be on the verge of bottoming out as it is..try getting some passengers in the back and you'll be leaving sparks all the way down the road :)

Mine was lowered 50mm at the front, then the rear matched to keep the rake, and it still struggled with more than one rear passenger. Here's the best side-on shot I can find of mine to show you how it looked:

Very nice car though..you've got me extremely jealous
