I can save a house for each child I don't have.

Kids start nursery aged 3.

Er, no. Our eldest started in nursery at 9 months. The government start giving you 15hrs a week of child care vouchers at age 3.

By the time my kids get to school they will have cost us about £30k each in child care.

What a load of toss. I have three kids and don't spend anywhere near that lol.

We don't use child care fulltime (we spend about £200 per month on it) but even if we did we wouldn't come close to that.

Our household income has gone down since having kids as my wife is a full time mother (and I am also paying for her to do a masters degree) and we certainly don't spend more than we did when we were just the two of us. Different things, yes, but not more.

Both our kids started nursery at around 9 months old its around £35 perchild per day

That in itself is a second mortgage

Worth every penny :)

I got 2 kids, missus and mum to look after on about £33k per annum - we all live fine and are grateful - in fact I would sometimes argue that we are spoilt compared to the rest of the world.

Other than school dinners (£12.50 each per week) and the occasional clothing costs here and there - there's not much cost really!! - These figures made up these days are BS. But then again we don't do unneccassry 'family holidays', nor childcare (missus currently part-time worker and luckily mum to help owt).

I think childcare these days is what's the killer and think people need to re-evaluate their lives. I know plenty of couples who won't quit working / re-prioritise and take a hit every month due to childcare costs - they also miss out on so much more time with their children tbh and would go so far as to argue it doesn't help a child when they are being raised by someone other than their own parents (but hey-ho that's context specific as we all know everyone has different circumstances).

Man I remember the good old days - we didn't used to have half the crap our kids do now and our parents got by fine.....well....... our kids are too darn spoilt! :p

To help people who, seeing this, think they've made a mistake, the limit for abortions should now be 18 years old.

Kids cost us way more than that but that was our choice to have one parent stay at home. Often these figures calculate the removal of the second wage in which case ours cost us a good 150k per year.

Depends how you do it and how you quantify it. We all have different thresholds for what we can and do give our kids. I know I spend a good grand a year just on my lads football most likely two grand when you add in all the travel costs and he is only 5. But then that is my choice and I see spending money on anything that improves the body or the mind as desirable and healthy. Other people however will see that as extravagant but then won't think a second by getting them a iPad etc. That however is not something I would do.

What I am saying is I can see how you could arrive at those figures quite easily.

Our son cost us £12k in the first 6 months.

Now he's costing around : £1500 a month at the age of 2 years (+ Birthday and Xmas presents)

Monthly breakdown
- Nursery : £1,250
- Food and Drinks : £40
- Clothes : £40
- Toys : £60
- Days out : £40

Interesting.

I honestly thought it was a lot higher than that. I've always accepted that I will have kids, but would prefer to hold off until this kind of money isn't an issue. If I couldn't ever afford it, I wouldn't do it.

But this seems... well, 'more reasonable'. Almost like you're getting a good deal on a child.

Weird way of looking at it...

you must have a lot of clothes and toys... ;) Also don't think we spend much more on food than we would otherwise, under 1 when we were still using formula, that stuff is incredibly expensive compared to cow milk, but since then there's nothing special...
