I've just picked up some of the Roccat Kave headphone (my first proper headphones and massively impressed) ideally I want to plug my cheap hi-fi and headphones in, so when i'm not using the headphones the hi-fi is playing the sound from movies etc. It's all over 3.5mm stereo

What is the easiest way I could do it? I've though about putting a splitter into the front channel and balancing it properly to account for the lower signal, is there a better way though?

You're not alone, I also have this problem.

I have the Kaves and a set of 2.1 desktop speakers, it's a PITA. I always have to go round the back of my PC and manually switch it round.

I use the Kaves 90% of the time so it's not too bad for me.

Dunno how ideal it would be, as thankfully my hifi is currently in storage.....

But could you not use a two into one 3.5mm jack? Think you can get them for about £2 each ;)

You could use a splitter, will certainly be the easiest way. However, when both are used simultaneously, it's not ideal. When using the headset, the speakers can be turned off, so that isn't a problem. However, when using the speakers, the headset is still on, so to speak, even if not in use. When both are in use at the same time, it messes with the impedance.

A selector switch would be a better idea. Although that will be awkward, as extra wiring will be required, due to the green 3.5mm jack of the Kave's, not reaching where ever the switch is located.

Only other possible option I can think of, is connecting the stereo to the front case audio socket.

Hi,

I have used the splitter idea with my Kaves and a my Logitech Z4 speakers, when I did not use the Kaves I simply turned the dials down on Kaves and activated the speakers. Worked great...until I swapped my sound card to the bottom rung of the motherboard and found my splitter would not allow me to fit both wires there. So at some point will ahve to swap my SLI and soundcard around.

From personal experience the splitter idea works fine. Just remember to place in a spacious PCI spot.

Cheers
