I can't bring myself to do any uni work.

You're not doing too badly then robmiller. :)
I'm aiming to finish my stupid sociology & health by 8am so i can go to the library with a few friends and get some text books for my next essay....THEN i go to bed. :(

I've got some work to be handed in by 3pm today.

Its basically a 3d model of my own head animated, gotta hand in all the working files....
I don't have any working texture files, only the final ones....

Permission to shout bother very loudly?

Im only in my first year at uni, but im doing suprisingly well on my actual work. At college if i had an essay id do it on the night before, but at uni i even go to the libary a good few days a week before and put my head down, just so i have a clear week of drinking without worrying at all! - Seems to be paying off.

One thing i am mising too much of though is lectures, and that is due to hangovers, but bah screw it, they post all of it up on the intranet anyway thats my theory done :D

Still, in the scheme of things, times are good when your worries involve motivation for making a 3D model of your own head!

I'm struggling with a Javascrpt assignment which has to be in Thursday - last bit of coursework due before Xmas, and I've done ok on the course so far and don't want to slip up on this one.

I dunno about anyone else, but when I went to uni I didn't actually expect to enjoy writing huge essays on stuff. I just got my head down and applied myself which is what I think you're supposed to do... not just moan that it's boring and you can't be arsed. A lot of things in life are boring, part of the challenge is to succeed even at times like these.

Since when did a Uni define coursework length in pages? The only time I've ever seen that done is when it was a very limited amount of pages.

'Word limit: About 10-15 pages'

More common is a maximum size "no more than 10 pages". It is much harder to write concisely.

I started Uni in September doing a Computer Science course and I just can't bring myself to do any work, nothing captivates me about it everything is so dull and boring.

To make it worse I have a report due in for "Personal and Professional Development" tomorrow about how peoples sleep patterns differ with age (how relevant) and it's supposed to be 10-15 pages long and I haven't even started it. I just cannot motivate myself to do it, like a mental block for the whole thing.

I don't even know whether to bother with Uni anymore, but then I don't have a clue what I would do without it, I don't want to settle with some crappo job either I'm a smart person I'm just fed up of academic work at the moment.

It might noit sound relevant but that is not the piint. The point is to get you to start writing scientific style reports and articles.

Computer Science is, wait for it, a science. That means it is a lot of theory and scientific practice and methodology. The most important skill in science is the ability to write scientific reports.

If the topic was something like "Describe the architectural advantages the modern day GPU posses over a conventional CPU for general purpose Signal Processing". Then any knowledge learned would be useless by the time you graduate. Computer Science is not applied.

I'm gnna fall into a sleep induced coma in a minute, trying to get these last 1,000 or so words done is killing me. Can't keep my eyes open... zZzzzZZzz

Gah - the youth of today! What does this hold in store for our country? No wonder there is such an influx of foreign talent. ;)

Seriously, though - the first two years of your course will probably be mostly theory with some interesting stuff right at the end for your dissertation. So be prepared to suck it up. I had to do a psychology module in my degree and it was the most crackpot module I ever did, purely because I didn't care for the science of applying long names to simple and widely known concepts.

I think you have to ask yourself a more fundamental question, however: why are you at university? If the course holds nothing interesting for you (i.e. is there really nothing on the curriculum you find interesting or will do in the coming two years (you will have been given a list of things you will study, so you should really have looked at that). Also, you should have really had a look at the course before applying to see if there was anything that took your fancy.

My older brother went to Newcastle to do computer science through clearing and could not stand it, even though it was the 'in' thing to do ten years ago. He dropped out and finished at De Montford in something like Media Studies, found something he really enjoyed and got a Masters from Edinburgh in Digital Media.

I took Sports and Materials Science because it was something that looked interesting on paper. In reality, the Materials Science element was awesome, which is why I did a PhD in it afterwards. And I'm now working as an IT consultant. Go figure.

I quite agree. Had a 2000 word thats due in on Thursday - initial thoughts:

'Wow, 2000 words? Easy'

Now its complete:

'Arghgh. 2000 words is NOT enough..'

Same. I have a 2k word essay on synesthesia. In that I must consider the aetiology, the condition itself, the condition from an anatomical point of view and much more. It's nigh on impossible.
