I was running ubuntu up until I upgraded to the rig below and now I cant install ubuntu it starts to load up and then stops and gives me massive error message or something.

Want I would like to know; is my hardware incompatible with ubuntu?

e2180@3ghz
4Gb Geil DDR2
abit IP35-e
galaxy 8800GT
X-fi extreme - ( i know this won't work but will use onboard audio)
250Gb seagate Disc

any ideas?

no it stops loading halfway thru, inttmfs or something is the error I guess I need to write it down, lol.

CD is good as i used to use it before and had tried 2 or 3 different ones too.

You'll need a sata cd drive to install it on that motherboard, or an ide hard drive. Basically you can't mix sata and ide. Search ubuntu forums for more info.

Its your 8800 GT causing problems.

To get it to work boot with added parameters:

replace splash with nosplash & add vga=791

so your4 launch line should be :

kernal ayayayahahahahahayayayaa nosplash vga=791

Once u have ubuntu installed you will need to add these launch commands to grub menu.

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

add nosplash vga=791 at the end.

This worked for me, just remember without these commands it will not boot.

Yes, but he can't install ubuntu.

The problem is the p35 chipset. I know because I have the same motherboard and had the same problems.

I had a similar issue with my 8800 GT.

He can try what im suggesting anyway.

Cane he get to the ubuntu start screen thingy?

Then he can press "e" over the launch command then add nosplash vga=791 then press "b".

I dont know about issues with his mainboard, my gigabyte P35-DS3R works without issue. Maybe ** right, maybe I am, maybe we are both right, maybe we are both wrong :)

At least he can try both

not sure about it being a chipset or gfx issue, i have a p35 chipset and an 8800gt and livecd and install went fine, id take a snap at having to set the sata mode to ahci in bios :)

The issue is with the 8800GT as it has been mentioned on the Ubuntu forums, also if you look at the latest Nvidia linux beta driver, one of it's fixes is identifying the new 8800GT/GTS cards.

Seems what some people are doing is running in Vesa mode just to get a desktop and then installing the relevant components along with the driver.

Don't all of these people with the 8800gt problems at least have ubuntu installed?

I have an 8800gts and it caused no problems with installation, however I did need to buy a sata dvd drive as there is some 'problem' with the p35 chipset; mixing ide optical and sata hd doesn't work, ahci needs to be enabled and the optical drive needs to be selected by model in the bios boot sequence.

My 8800GT is in a delivery van somewhere in the Wiltshire countryside... I'll be building my new PC this evening and installing tonight/tomorrow so we'll see how it goes. Not using a P35 chipset motherboard though, so fingers crossed there won't be any issues.
