my wife is going through catholic school(not sure what its called but they train you in the ways of the catholic) right now to get our kids into the local catholic school shes been told 6 months of lessons then we can be catholics..

they are being taught there at the moment but have been told if the demand by catholics becomes goes up they are kicked out.

Grandad was a Church Of Ireland minister. He's still an Orangeman as well (over 50 years now). Growing up, we were always at his Church and we'd go and watch the Twelfth where-ever he was parading. Moved to the other end of the country when I was ten. Lurgan. All I can say about Lurgan and the surrounding area is that it made me the atheist I am today. That entire part of the country is one cesspool of hatred. Whether it's Lurgan, Portadown, Craigavon... It's an us or them mentality and all I can say is that the only way anyone would get me into that part of the country again is if I were dead.

I still love the sound of Lumbeg Drums though.

Wow, I must be a freaky anomalie! :D

I was brought up as an Eastern EU styleeeee Catholic, and have stayed Catholic, go to church once a week (even though at uni). I do actually feel a connection when going to church, and love going to the student church. Met some great people there, extremely friendly, and its like a place like no other IMHO.

I respect all beliefs, and the majority of my friends are athiest (I'd say about 85%). I really don't interfere what others believe, because everyone believes what they think is best. If they're happy, then I am! :D:o

Same as you bought up as a Seventh day adventist. But nope, don't think about religion other than in religion threads on here.
it was never forced on my mum made me go until I was about 14/15ish. But she always taught me religion was personal choice and that I must decide. I'm very grateful she made me go, I'm a more rounded person for it and it just shows how "racist"(phobia of religion) and stupid many atheists are.

why are you assuming that MANY ATHEISTS are stupid and "racist"? no one should force beliefs on anyone. Even if your view is "there is a God" or "when your dead, there is nothing". It should be kept to yourself.

I agree with you, you have your beliefs and do what you do. I hate people who preach.

Respect to you.

My uncle (mums sisters hubby) used to make lambeg drums, jacked it all in when he left the church of ireland and became an evangelical preacher:D

Brought up as a Protestant, went to a private Roman Catholic school ( oh, the irony ).

The principal was a Sister (?) and wore a habit (?). Had to go to Mass but, thankfully, not to Confession ( I was the enemy :p ). Also, once a week, we had to listen to Monsignor drone on about the Acts of the Apostles. Gave me a chance to catch up on some zzzs.

I was guilt-tripped into going to church, even up to the age of 20.
I develped the tactic of locking myself in the bathroom just before departure time but it made for very unpleasant, tension filled, Sunday afternoons. I remember Mother once saying, "You will not defy me!".

I left home at 21 and I am now blissfully agnostic.

It's a wonderful instrument. Everytime I hear it, it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It's the only part of the marching season I enjoy anymore. Where I'm living is pretty rural and it seems to be only rural places keeping the practice alive. But on a summers evening, with the wind just right you can hear them out practicing from miles away.

Same, christened, holy comm, catholic primary and secondary, hated mass, used to cause issues and fall asleep and i dont belive in any religion what so ever not even in the slightest..

Infact, I hate religion if anything, it causes problems..

Thanks! I'm actually annoyed at one christian I know who is an Anglican. He segregates himself to his anglican christian friends group. I'm like  cos he seems to treat others different and he acts weird. Maybe that's just his character, but I don't like the idea of segregation of friends groups to own religious groups. It annoys me BIG time

Brought up with a catholic mam and agnostic dad and don't feel forced to be religious. I do enjoy going to church and try to live by Christian values. Some of my closest, most loyal friends in the whole world are not religious and I will never try and force them to be (it goes against the idea of freedom), I do like their open-mindedness and the fact they don't judge me for my choices and beliefs, and would defend their right to make informed decisions freely, which I think would include discussions about the existence of God.
