I don't get Noel Fielding's work

Just watched some stand-up comedy at the Montreal Comedy Festival on Paramount; A load of American and Canadians had some decent material. Then Noel Fielding came on.. and he totally baffled me. He didn't come up with any jokes - just told weird abstract stories which looked really unplanned. The audience was pretty miffed as well, but seemed to laugh.. at him I guess. I mean I appreciate he's got his own style, but he really bombs with his stand-up material. I really don't get 'The Mighty Boosh' either. I guess you have to be on some alternative wavelength to actually understand his world.

I watched that also, and he's just trying to be "Random" or different. Not really that funny and he didn't seem to have a clue as to what he was doing.

Especially when he kept saying hey to everyone in the audience without progressing.

However the bloke before him was quality, with the cinema voice :p

He baffles me too, especially in the Mighty Boosh, where I find the secondary characters he does funny, but I have never, not once laughed at anything Vince says or does. Not even a snigger. He just stands there and smirks, and it seems like he has zero chemistry with Barrat.

I'm half and half. I do like parts of the Mighty Boosh, it does have its moments. But like people have already mentioned, they aren't really trying to be funny, they're trying to be strange. Its a bit of a sour act now as most of the jokes they are doing just feel the same.

I think the Mighty Boosh is great but you're right about his stand-up, I've seen him live an it just doesn't seem to translate well.

He'd be a better quiz show host or some kind of "Friday night project" type show host. He plays better off other peoples reactions more than written or stand up comedy. He was excellent on nevermind the buzzcocks filling in for Bill when he was touring.

Agreed

I would class him in the same style of comedy as somebody like Russell Brand; basically a very simple man whos crazy antics inspire a certain amount of mirth in the less educated masses. At least with Brand he is whacky enough to be quite funny and beneath the insanity lay a couple of viable brain cells. Fielding is just boring to watch, and boring to listen to and just utterly uninspiring. I view him in much the same way i view pete dohkerteee (?). A talentless individual i know very little about, have absolutely no desire to know anything about, and yet somehow wont do the decent thing and **** off and die.

comedians like this all try to emulate Eddie Izzard who didnt half ramble, but was funny with it

the only other stand up I have seen who was similar in his rambling to Izzard but still different and funny is Ross Noble..his brain seems to be wired wrongly but is still laugh out loud funny

See I find Ross Noble irritating, and trying to be "kooky" and "wierd".

I remember seeing Noel Fielding years ago on Jongleurs or some sort of comedy standup and found it really good - he was also really good standing in for Bill Bailey as well, the right kind of humour for that show.

Rich

<EDIT>

Although I do agree that Eddie Izzard is one of the stand-up greats, the way he can ramble and make it all seem not relevent yet beautifully written is brilliant.

"Cake or Death?!"

"Seems we have quite a run on cake today..."

He's just not funny. I guess The Mighty Boosh is good because its a duo, but Noel Fielding himself, is just not a funny guy.

He's not a standup comedian. Obviously, he does therefore he is, but he's not. His brand of humour is reactive - I found him hilarious when he guested on Buzzcocks, but it only works when he's bouncing off other people. It's that kind of in-joke stuff you have with your mates, and I can imagine his standup would be a little too esoteric for people to actually appreciate.

He works in boosh because it's just so well written, and he's essentially playing himself, only a bit stupid.

His actually quite stupid, as witnessed on that Channel 4 end of year quiz he does... He also needs a haircut.

lol, I don't think that's to be taken seriously. I believe it's some sort of comedy show, rather than University Challenge for celebrities! That show also makes Russell Brand look stupid, but that he is not!

Also: Eddie Izzard is just not funny

I've not seen The Mighty Boosh but saw some of his stand-up on a comedy DVD and didn't find him that funny at all. Far too random for my liking but there must be some people who find him amusing otherwise he wouldn't be able to make a living out of it.

Thought he was ok on the quiz of the year, worked better with him being able to 'bounce off' other characters such as Jonathan Ross.

Did you have the sound on? You know you need the sound on right?!

As for Fielding.. dont like the Mighty Boosh.. do like "The Moon"

Also thought he was good on buzzcocks and big fat quiz..
