I don't really know what I'm doing!! Play along!!

Nice one boys!!

I think I'm done!! Even downloaded the various softwares to change all the silly RGB stuff that's on everything these days to a nice static white across the board...

Bios updated and this is all the info I don't understand...

I'll get Ryzen Master now, take some screenies, then I'll take some gratuitous shots of the finished article and chuck up a list of everything.

EDIT:

No idea what any of that means?!?!

I wonder if a new PC can magically make me better at PUBG??

Just ran Cinebench. 3568 points, no clue if that's good or bad, but hoping someone here can tell me whether it's about right??

The reason I ran it was to check the CPU temp. By the end it reached 70 degrees, and as soon as it was finished immediately dropped to 36. That's ok, right??

System is almost silent to!! WHich I'm really pleased about...

Any other benchmarks I should run? Not sure about overclocking. Dabbled in it when I built my first PC, never done it since, wouldn't have a clue.

I've bought bits over time, and just grabbed them when they're cheap, so hopefully I've saved a little here and there...

Specs and prices:-

PC
Ryzen 3600 (advised against the 'X' and the 3700X as there's no real 'productivity' going on here) - £180
Gigabyte Aorus Elite x570 Motherboard - £190
Gigabyte RTX 2080 Gaming OC - £630
Gigabyte Aorus P750 Gold Plus PSU - £80
16Gb (2 x 8Gb) Kingston Hyper X Fury DDR4 3200MHz - £80
Sabrent 1Tb M.2 SSD - £120 (dedicated 'Steam' drive)
Samsung 970 Evo 500Gb M.2 SSD - ~£95 (OS drive)
Seagate FireCuda 1Tb Hybrid HDD - ~£60 (General storage)
bequiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU cooler - ~£75
bequiet! Pure Base 500 case - £75 (black with tempered glass side panel)

PC Total - £1585

Peripherals

Razer Blackwidow Elite Keyboard
Razer Deathadder Elite Mouse - ~£170 (bought as a bundle)
Razer Nommo Chroma - £100
Asus Predator X34 3440x1440 (A1 Refurbished) - £400

Peripherals Total - £670

Ikea VÄSTANBY desktop £115

Grand Total £2370

Everyone always asks about the desk too, so it's a 'Calia' from John Lewis. Bought it years ago, but I think it's about £500.
Needed more space for the monitor and to get the PC up off the floor, so I simply bought the VÄSTANBY from Ikea. Perfect size.
I was going to pu some sort of sticky pad beneath it to stop it sliding around, but it's rock solid under the weight of everything.

Next up, I need a new chair (how about a nice discount on a Noble OcUK?! ;) ), and a new headset. I think I'm going for the Arctis Wirelss Pro...

Any suggestions on what else I could/should do, anything I could change, anything I could have done better will be appreciated.

Thanks for playing!!

Right, sadly, the PSU is playing up :(

Only started after I'd been playing around in PUBG for 20 minutes, but now it's constant...

It now makes a constant 'clicking' noise, but I can't work it out because it's not the fan and there are no other moving parts?!

Also noticed really bad coil wine from the GPU, but research suggests that this may be down to a crappy PSU and not necessarily the GPU itself. Is that right?

Audio clip below because my description is rubbish!!

Try your old PSU? Definitely noise coming from the PSU?

It’s absolutely definitely the PSU.

The recording was taken with the PSU removed from the case.

It’s nothing to do with the PSU fan either. The fan spins up fine when the computer boots, with no adverse noises whatsoever. Then stops spinning as it’s supposed to because the computer is idle.

No idea if this is relevant, but when I power off the PC there’s a real ‘ping’ from the PSU as it shuts off...

If you bought a windows key from Kinguin and it doesn't activate straight away do the following it worked for me on Win 10 Pro

from the Kinguin site under "KEY ACTIVATION DETAILS"
If you encounter any issues during activation, please follow these steps:

  1. Open Start menu, type SLUI 04 and press enter,
  2. Select your country, and call the toll-free number. Follow the instructions provided by the automated activation system to receive a confirmation ID and activate your OS.

Thanks dude, I appreciate it.

I’ll try in the morning and report back...

Windows sorted with a key bought elsewhere.

Refund sorted with Kinguin (eventually!!).

PSU changed and there is zero clicking noise, and no more of what I thought was coil whine from the GPU.

Only thing with the new PSU is the cables are somehow thicker and more cumbersome than the ones from the Aorus.
I think I’ll invest in some custom cables.

Still no response from OcUK on the return of the duff PSU... perhaps they’re just trying to decide just how much discount they’re giving me on a Noble Chair :D

Nice build and glad it's all working ok. Would you recommend the case for a newbie?
Absolutely!

As you can see, I’m basically a newbie myself.

Plenty of room, couple of great case fans pre installed, fantastic quality (not just for the price, just overall fantastic quality).

plenty of places to mount things, and the PSU shroud and all the room underneath gives loads of space for hiding cables etc making for a clean build even if like me you don’t really know what you’re doing.

Personal preference this bit, but no RGB either.

Go for it, and post up your build

I’ve gone for the black one.

Hardware Canucks have done a review on the grey one and they love it, so personal preference...

Just stuck with the two fans. I’ve also got a bequiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU cooler.

My crude and brief benching running Cinebench on the CPU doesn’t show the CPU ever going above 70 degrees.

Running the Superposition and Heaven benchmarks for the GPU shows that the GPU never goes above 63 degrees.

So the pre installed case fans seem to be doing an ample job of pulling in cool air at the front and chucking it out the back.

I took months getting all of the bits together. If it’s a personal project, there’s no rush.

How are you finding the Razer keyboard and mouse? I'm really stuck on choosing peripherals.
Probably my favourite part!!

Only got my old Roccat stuff to compare them too, but I love them. Razer stuff always feels quality to use, and their mice are certainly the best I've ever used. With the speakers, keyboard and mouse all synced up the whole setup looks brilliant.

Love the clever use of lighting on the speakers too.

Razer is pricey though...
