I'm moving my i7 into another case with a 400w psu, paired with a NVidia quadro 4000, 2x ssd, 3x hdd, 1x dvd,

coolermaster psu calc puts it at 486w under load or 450w without overclock. I know people say these calcs are poop but can anyone adivse do I need a minimum of 500w. I don't want to buy a new PSU if I can help it

the i7 920 TDP is 130w, and the QUADRO 4000 is 142w

The Xigmatek Maverick is a Andyson built unit with only 360w on the 12v rail. Oh yes, it's rubbish as well so that rules that one out. Can you post up a picture of the other one, preferably fan side up with the cable side facing the camera? Seeing where you bought it's probably a CIT, Powercool or G7 unit and if it is either of those the best place for it is in the bin. The label falling off is not a good sign as it shows they even skimped on the glue!! In the highly unlikely event it's a decent unit then it may be of use. Other than that you are going to have to splash the cash and buy a decent psu.

Yup cheap PSUs can go pop, and make a few other things go pop in the process, i found that out the hard way once and never bought a cheap one again.

Holy crap, you have picked a top of the line psu!!:eek::eek:

Seeing your post last night asking about the minimum you could get away with sent me to bed in despair* but seeing your last post this morning has given me hope that I am not banging my head against the wall for nothing and that the message that myself and others preach is finally getting through. :):p:D

An alternative is the Excellent EVGA Supernova G2 550w (not sold here for some reason) which is basically the same psu but has a different fan, no led's and a longer warranty.

*Not really despair, was feeling awful. The wife was off with bronchitus last week so she's given me the lurgey and my throat is red raw.

small update.. got all the bits and have been messing around with both pcs over the last couple of evenings ..

very impressed with this for a £30 cooler "Brocken ECO CPU" it was the largest one that would fit in my zalman z1 case at 150mm, quite easy to assemble. Same with the Superflower PSU, although the cables aren't very flexible. The strange thing is after putting all my i7 -920 bobbins into the smaller Zalman case, windows has corrupted and wont boot.. no big drama there was nothing on it apart from windows but just a bit annoying..

the Z97 and i7-4790k are now in the enthoo primo, this is much master. the M.2 boots almost instantly. The only concern I have with is cooling , the Antec AIO is a pain to fit without any assistance, still I got it installed. the idle temps are 30-35 which I guess is normal. Whenever the CPU goes under load the fans really throttle up, is this normal? the i7 920 didn't do this. but I don't think its CPU fan control was as sensitive as new mobo. anyway lunchtime waffles oover..

oh the 4970k is much faster in BF1 and only seems to be at 45% load
