When I talk to friends about my gym regime they will answer with details of their own fitness lifestyle, which consists of a bit of light hearted, well meaning, but ultimately pointless exercise plus the following:

"I'm not going to the gym/Don't want to lift weights as I don't want to get huge"

At this point I'm always sick into my mouth a little bit at the sheer absurdity of this statement, and how so many people can seem to utter it in all seriousness without bursting out laughing afterwards.

Do people really think that their token attempts at trying to get fit if transferred to gym and weights will get them even breaking a sweat let alone "huge"?!

People are so deluded. Does anyone else get this or is it just my strange bunch?

Nah, thankfully I don't hear anything much like that. Of my mates who go to the gym they usually understand the effort required to get big (even vaguely) so they won't make statements like that and I don't tend to discuss gym going with the rest, they simply aren't interested which suits me fine as well.

I hear this a lot @ work and it makes me laugh and cringe at the same time

"Spent 3hrs down the gym today was a good work out"
"Ill see how this whey goes and how big I get off it first"
"Dont need to train legs I do running"
"Dont need to train legs I just want to get bigger"

And I also hear that "I dont want to get huge thing" its stupid. Its as if people think there is a very fine line between training 1 way and then doing maybe 1-2 reps extra and getting huge. OMFG I DID TOO MANY REPS IM GONNA GET HUGE :s

I also hear the "I do eat loads, crisps chocolates jam sandwiches and that" tbh ive tried talking to said people giving them help but 1) im not very big so they think im making it up 2) they seem content in their ways so now I have given up.

Talk about cringeworthy statements..................

No, I dont have this problem as I'm not a gym frequenting body fascist.

What benefit does your gym going give you over, say for example.............me?

:)

I know women say that a lot so I just let them know it can't happen unless they inject testosterone.

I kind of get annoyed at people who say they want to "tone up" and "turn fat into muscle". Even when you explain it, quite a few people just say "same thing".

Maybe all they're trying to say is that they've got no interest in building muscle. Refering to it as 'getting huge' might just be exageration in order to get their point across.

Nah I don't think so. The guys I've talked to always say that bodybuilders like Arnie are too big, they just wanna be Mens Health model kinda size.

I think they genuinely believe that training like Arnie will have them looking like Arnie in a matter of months, as opposed to reaching their goals faster than the way they're currently doing it (i.e. the wrong way).

Had that plenty of times in the past, seem to have some good people in my office now though, a lot of them ask me for advice (after taking the wee for my 5kg tubs of whey that i take into the office hehe), one now has a home gym (huge contraption that actually looks quite useful!) and a couple are doing exercises for rehab to rotator cuff injuries (docs have offered them injections!).

and this probably means they just want to be cut and not fat: at least as far as the skinny ones are concerned because Mens health model can still mean a lot of work to the ignorant.

mens health models arent esactly small, they probably arent far off from what a lot of the old style (except the truely exceptional) of body builders are in terms of size

It is enough for me to be as good as I can be. For everybody the ignorance is part of the learning process.

what makes their exercise pointless?

Well, speaking only for my friends, it's their half arsed approach to it. No real effort or desire to change. One person even said they had just run a couple of laps of the park (about a 1km lap) and immediately opened two packets of space raiders! And I later found out that they hadn't even run whole laps, they had to stop and rest for a while.

It sounds harsh, but I am not one to ciriticise those that try to change their lifestyle, but with these people I don;t see them trying to change. It's just some token effort to stop them feeling so bad about themselves, which is fine but god I never want to be like that!

It comes down to what their goals are. A lot of people would just like to be cardiovascularly fitter and a bit skinnier.

I too don't want "to get huge" but I'm under no illusion that I am going to have that happen by mistake, I'm also one of the lucky ones in that I'm fairly well built with minimal weight work anyway :D I only really do weights because I quite enjoy them. I'm sure some of you may well scoff at what I do at the gym, but I'm achieving my goals just fine for me :)

One persons big is anothers skinny anyway. Who knows maybe you would consider me "big" if i posted a photo raaaaaaaaw:D

Doesn't matter if they eat space raiders; they still get all the benefits for the heart, lungs and mind from exercise.

I think you mean regular exercise. How great would it be if we could do one workout a year and it would make us loads healthier!!

Indeed.

Just going for a half arse run from time to time isn't really going to do you much good, in fact it may well do more harm!

If you do a minimum of 20-30mins of decent exercise or strenuous activity a day it's something - but really to be in any chance of changing your body/mind/fitness, you have to change your whole lifestyle. Your food, your sleep, and the type of exercise you do - if you don't do as a minumum these 3, then you'll hardly going to change yourself.

And to get "huge" requires a LOT of hard work. I'd like to think I know what I'm doing - and it's taken me a good year of hard training, eating well, not drinking, to put on a significant amount of mass whilst keeping my bodyfat low - I've put on about a stone of lean mass, which is a fair amount of weight considering the low amount of bodyfat I'm carrying.

So anyone thinking that lifting weights 3x a week is going to make them get "big" is deluding themselves. It takes a lot more than a bit of casual weight lifting to achieve size gains.

However from the point of view of maintenance and general fitness then of course it's not a problem.

I know exactly what you guys mean, but I actually dont want to get 'huge', i've come to the conclusion that getting big is vastly overrated and serves no purpose really.

Strength is where its at, its a lot more useful to be strong then just big. I've recently got some gymnastic rings, after a couple more weeks of doing Crossfit im gona try out a totally gymnastic ring-based and bodyweight routine only :p should increase strength, especially core a lot, not to mention balance and stability, which i think is a lot more usefull then just doing weights and getting 'big', all IMO off course ;)
