I fancy a change however unsure of the best way to go about it

That's a lot of money to spend on an OS you don't yet know whether you like. Personally I would look for a used 2015 MBP. If you find you like MacOS and want something more modern then sell it for similar money and then but a new one (Applecare is a must with that 2016 to 2018 butterfly keyboard though).
Keyboards have a 3 year warranty anyway :)

The missus has a Macbook Pro - looks nicely built, looks pretty, but it's loud, battery isn't all it's hyped up to be, plus the power brick broke within months of ownership. For just browsing the internet etc, save yourself the cash, seriously!

I went for a mixture of both in the end.
I picked up a new Ipad Pro and looking at a second hand MBP 512/16gb which is advertised at £1500
The Ipad will be a bit better than the old one I had (plus it has more capacity) and the MBP will let me try the whole MacBook scene for half the price of buying new :)

Excellent, let us know how you get on and what you think of it. I did something similar ten years ago and haven't looked back.

shall do. is the Apple pencil worth the cost or is it just a gimmick? seems to be a mixture of reviews for it.

To get the most out of your Macbook, I suggest using Safari - quicker and more efficient. It's a pain to begin with, but use lastpass (or similar) so all your autofill stuff get's transferred over.

I find the battery life on them to be the best in the business. It's perhaps not the longest lasting in specific conditions, but it's the most consistent.

I had the XPS 15 with the advertised 19 hours of battery life etc. Browsing the web on Chrome and watching videos I got about a quarter to a third.

For me, the premium I paid was worth it, but I managed to get a 3 day old 15 inch maxed out for £1800 (Kabylake version), simply because the guy didn't like it and put it straight back in the box. I don't think I'd have paid 3K for it though.

It's of absolutely no use to me because I don't use my iPad Pro for anything that would need it.

Sounds like you were in the right place at the right time! transferring the autofill info would be a god send as well.

im in the same boat I think. I haven't needed a stylus or anything on my old ipad. If I see one second hand I may pick one up but £80 is a little steep for a "pencil" even for me ha

I take my 12.9 iPad Pro to meetings when I'm traveling.

The pencil is great as I can switch between taking notes and using it as a pointer for Windows. I use office remote desktop on it to access all my Windows only apps and data on the move and it works really well.

So much so I'm tempted to buy the keyboard cover.
