I fancy trying one of the new MMOs - RF Online or D&D Online?

As per title really.

I've tried loads of MMOs over the years from Ultima Online through to EQ2, WoW etc.
To be honest I've never found any of them as good as UO but meh :\

I've been looking at the two new titles in town today and wondered what peoples opinions are. It would seem D&D online uses a real-time combat system which sounds quite appealing?

Apparently D+D Online is quite poor, although I haven't played it myself so I can't provide any personal opinion on the game.

I have however played RF Online. I'll keep it short:

For a start, this game is FULL of bugs. It's been translated from Korean very poorly. The interface is sub-standard, it lacks even the most basic of features and the chat system is absolutely horrendous.

The PvP system, which I might add is the main focus of this game, is lacking to say the least and entirely flawed.

Steer well clear from this game. It sucks, plain and simple.

I played the beta of DnD online Stormreach, and although parts of it are poor where it shines is the dungeons and they are in seperate instances so no one out side your group will be bothering you or farming the pickups/chest there, also if u get a good group the missons/quests are easy even on hard or elite diffculty. I saw myself playing until 7 in the morning its so addictive.

I've been playing D&D and really liking it. Pretty bug free and looks and plays really well, BUT it's completely dependant on getting a group, there's almost no solo content at all after the first hour or so of play.

The combat is real time, but still using D&D rules in the background, it's still quite tactical. You can jump and climb and roll, it's a lot more interesting in the dungeons from that point of view.

It's also completely instanced, every single area other than the city itself are purely you and your party (although you can form larger raids for big dungeons). Good if you have a regular group of friends to adventure with, a bit hit and miss otherwise.

Yea i forgot to mention there no real solo adventure, but that was the way of the DnD paper or so ive been told, and if ** going to choose a character then theres 2 classes that always get picked for groups the cleric and rouge they are essential if they want to complete quests 100%

Played both in Beta, currently playing DnD online as my only MMO.

RF - As said before badly swapped from Korean, it does still have a surprising amount of bugs considering it's a year old already. Would have expected these to be mainly sorted out, but then that never stopped EQ2! It’s more like EQ/EQ2 I found for the grinding/quest orientation of the game, but not as good or original. Personally I didn’t really get on with it.

(Played UO for 3 years and would say that’s the best game thus far, well until they borked it making it itemised, also played EQ for 4 years raiding etc)

DnD – Enjoyed the beta thou that alone I’m not sure if I would have brought the game. Main reason I’m playing it now is because 10-20 friends are also playing. Defiantly getting a lot more interesting now I’m level 4, some brilliant quests which really do require a bit of thinking about.

I think any MMO player who likes dungeon crawl type fights would like DnD but a lot relies (everything past level 2) on grouping. Which is brilliant if you get a good group and terrible if you get a bad group. Maybe worth a shot, nice as you easily get groups and can nip in and out for a hour at a time or spend 5-6 hours playing at once.

Are there any good MMO trials around at the moment I can try out?

I know everyone on here bangs on about EVE - I bought it on release and just could not get into it :s

I hate to say this but I have drifted back to *gulps* MxO!

As a vet UO player I am also searching for the ultimate replacement. However The Matrix Online just keeps calling me back.

Hey its cheap and has the usual 30 day trial - you got nuffin to lose :p

I actually have a copy of that around somewhere which I never used after the beta. I played for a couple of weeks after beta ended but it just seemed really awful :(

I wish Ultima Online was still good...

Also id like to say it best if you have a group on the ingame voice, or things can get a bit serious/funny espically if the rouge is shouting theres traps ahead and half the group runs forward and dies and start complaing cause they didnt know.

Give it a shot its pretty cool - Open PvP on the Hostile server keeps things interesting when you get above lvl 16. There is plenty to do and the game is just starting to get going in terms of the Dev team.

Soon to be release Combat System 2 is a pretty big overhaul of that system. Plus many other changes - along with a hint they might do some MxO style factions.

I'm still playing Neverwinter Nights online in a "permanent world".
Great first player game, though I've no idea how well it compares against other "permanent world" servers.

Anyone care to comment?

The good news is that it IS a great offline game, is free to play online, and has a LOT of scenerios that can be downloaded for play.

Ive also tried both games and found them both very poor in comparison to WoW. Im a complete WoW addict (since beta :() and im I worried if im going to be impressed again by any other MMORPG.

RF Online is ok, but pretty poor compared to World of Warcraft for example. I'm satisfied at the moment because I picked it up cheap and I'm currently using a 30-day trial. Like others have said, although it looks nice, it has a poor interface and chat system. I won't be carrying on with a further subscription as I will go back to WoW in a few weeks time but if they do improve the game a lot, I may reconsider giving it another try.

Eve has changed a helluva lot since release mate, might be worth giving it another shot on a free trial.
