Lovely Wolver-ampton!
Of un-documented age. It's done nearly 250k. Still on original clutch. Just had new front tyres and cam belt done 10k ago. Tiny bit rusty but 10 months MOT left. Taxed too.

Should keep me going for a few months. Yay - transport! Turbo Diesel too :) Though just how much the turbo will actually work at that age....May as well f@rt. :)

A Vento is a more modern version of the Jetta.
To the OP you got a great little bargin especially for free. Just look after it and I reckon you will get another 5-10 year motoring out of it as they really are work horses if well cared for.

They did. Lovely cars. Stiffer shell than the Golf and much more understated.

I prefer the Vento front end too.

A 2.9/3.1 VR6 with a blower is a serious weapon.

having the radio in the back window was a bit gay imo

Also it NEED's bigger wheels, whatever it came with always looks far too small

I remember washing my neighbours Vento as a kid. £5 a fortnight felt like winning the lottery :p

As free cars go thats not a bad motor

Will do! As I said, it's had some work done recently and is one of those cars that just doesn't want to give up. My missus's old man has driven it for yonks - has some rust around the wings and bottom of doors but only cosmetic stuff not strength issues. 250k seems really high for mileage but if it drives, it drives.

Two new front tyres, cam belt recently. I'm not gonna be doing any Stig driving in it, but a free car always appeals. Saves me 3k cos I was looking at Accord's.

Out of curiosity, how long do tubos last? I know the car was driven pretty much into 5th and very little use of clutch due to muchos motorway miles but thinking that keeping in 5th would not be too stressing on the turbo?

And the clutch too... I'm expecting to have to do that soon. Again, 250k sounds a lot on such a vital moving part.

Turbo life depends a lot on how its maintained and driven. With frequent oil changes (of the correct quality) and letting it warm up before giving it beans as well as letting it cool down before shutting off after a fast drive it should last well. I'm not familiar with the particular engine though I'd expect a VW diesel of that age to be pretty tough.

As for the clutch, I had a Mondeo 1.8 petrol on 295,000 miles (taxi driven daily from Heathrow to Newport) and it was still on the original, though there was a tiny bit of slippage if you really kept your foot down after a gear change.

Does it bite towards the very top of its travel? If so it might start to slip soon.

Not sure yet, it hasn't been brought over to me. I'll let you know and post some pics.

ooooooh....

just found out it has a blaupunkt stereo with 6 disc changer! worth about 500 notes apparently - was bought when the missus's father had a flutter that came in! i think that doubles the value of the car :)

assume it's running through the standard speakers and not amped. cant be bothered getting an amp but will probs look at getting the standard drivers updated f and r to somthing a bit more punchy. and recommendations? i have a bass junkies shop near me. would fitting be relatively cheap if i bought the speakers from them? what would i need for a vento???
