I did indeed.

Travelling down the A500/'D-road', the bit after J16 of the M6, where it goes to single-carriageway (Stoke people will know it), I approach a lorry infront, wait until it is safe to overtake on a straight bit of road, I maneuver to overtake (the lorry is probably doing 50. Half way through overtaking I see the car behind me is overtaking also and is right behind me. I come up to the roundabout ahead, lampposts light up the street as I think 'wtf?'. I notice POLICE in the rear-view mirror.

I was doing 70ish on the overtake, so I automatically start swearing and cursing to myself. He follows me a little while down the next road and flashes his lights at the end so I pull over. He pulls along side me with window down, has a bit of a shout at me telling me to use mirrors when overtaking, and to pull over when he flashes his lights the first time (he flashed before apparently). Then says I'm lucky as he has another job to go to. He speeds of and I chill for a bit.

So can I expect a letter through the post? Will he have taken my reg. number? For some reason I'm thinking that if a patrol car catches someone speeding, they have to pull them over. I have 0 points atm and want it to stay that way. I just can't believe how lucky I am.

Fairly certain you will be safe.No NIP given etc.He just gave you a verbal bashing in the hope it will have an effect.

No, you can expect easyrider to come trash this thread.

In seriousness, is the road a 60MPH limit? because 70 to perform an (in your eyes) safe overtake inst the worst crime in the world. There are also a lot of grounds for you to say it wasnt right for the cop to want to overtake you both, he should have had his lights on going to a job, etc etc, but fact is, you did something wrong, they stopped you, and you have effectively got of with a warning. Will you take his advice to heart? Check your mirrors more, be more careful overtaking, etc? If so, his job is done.

Yes the road is a 60 limit, and I accept that someone has deemed 60 is maximum that is safe for that road but there was no on-coming traffic so I believe it was safe to do 70 (doing 60 would have meant me taking even longer to do the overtake which is less-safe imo). I did check my mirrors, and he maneuvered to overtake at exactly the same time as me so I thought nothing of it. He didn't have lights or his siren on at any point when overtaking.

He wasn't very happy when he pulled me over. Perhaps he was about to finish his shift.

Never met a happy traffic cop :D Mostly in my younger days but they all were shouting something at me by the time my windows were rolled down :D

I think it was mainly because he knew he knew you were doing absolutely nothing wrong, he wasn't bored enough to pull you over properly and because he knew you'd take him to the "******* cleaners" if you complained about him.

Yeah you won't hear anything more from it.

Check your mirrors in future though! have had a few people pull out in front of me whilst overtaking causing me to brake or go 3 abreast if the road is wide enough!

If theres one thing that traffic plods suffer from, it's boredom.

You just caught him when he was extra bored.

Which is what I expect the OP did. Or rather didn't. Had some dozy bint do exactly this yesterday: I was already on the wrong side of the road and start to accelerate when I saw her car start to shift over (no indicators, natch). I had to slow down to stop her taking the front of my car off.

I wouldn't expect anything back

I did a similar move (although mine was far more stupid on my part) a few weeks ago

I overtook someone in a 30 limit (this is when you cut through Manston Airport and the actual limit is only for a few hundred yards - not in a town or anything!) and just as I did this a police car came around the corner at the end of the road and saw me overtaking this person (who I'd been following for miles!) and breaking the limit

Thankfully all I got was a producer and a stern warning - very lucky! He said that he was about to set up a speed trap so if I'd seen him 10 minutes later I'd have got 3 points!

The cop didn't charge you with anything, so what are you expecting to get. It just sounds like he gave you an ear bashing for your poor driving.

You probably cut the copper up without looking. Plus the fact you didn't notice him flashing you to stop.

I would suggest that learn to use your mirrors properly, before you cause an accident.
