I hate air con

I think aircon is important in some environments, certainly a lot of glass covered buildings, or buildings with poor air circulation. Certainly, some companies (mine included) don't allow windows to be opened - furthermore ,drafts cause a pain when papers are blown around.

I do agree that whacking it on 16C is OTT and wasteful. 21C is about right in my opinion.

I too would prefer not to use AC, but sometimes it's just such a great thing to have. I seldom use it in my car - unless I'm on the motorway.

We couldn't cope without AC in our office. Before it was fitted it used to get to 35C+ regularly in summer even with the windows open.

Also the other problem with the window open is we are right next to an airbase and when those euro fighters take off you couldn't even hold a conversation with the window open.

You hate Con Air?

Granted, Nicholas Cage can be a bit much but I've always quite enjoyed the film.

"Why didn't you put the bunny back in the box?"

I'm sitting here freezing my **** off because the idiot building managers in this office think that just because we have a few days sun that is just cause to push air con to the same extent that you'd expect in the sahara.

Have you considered asking them to turn the temperature up?

Can someone tell me why in god's name anyone ever thought that installing air con units in office buildings in this country was a good idea? We do not have the climate that requires it,

Most offices get pretty hot in the summer, especially if the are a lot of computers or people.

and it is shocking to think how much energy is wasted

You mean saved, air conditioning doesn't just cool the air when told to maintain a temperature lower than it would otherwise be, it also heats it when told to maintain a temperature above what it would otherwise be, heating via a/c is more energy efficient than using any electric heater or boiler fed radiators. It also cleans and dehumidifier the air.

Not to mention how many days work are lost because of the spread of germs and illness, through recirculation of dirty air.

Hardly any, this never happens unless the systems are improperly maintained and allowed to fall into disrepair.

*edit*

sorry for resurrecting this thread, landed here from search and forgot to check date.

My office’s temperature is like:
Winter time – super cold, everyone wearing jackets and body warmers (in an office). 12C-16C (in the morning till midday) is normal for most of the days, heating just doesn’t work very well.

Summer time – air con on and off, once its super cold, once its super hot, we never have stable temperature. Lack of fresh air sometimes makes me difficult to breath but nobody cares.

Working with massive machines that put out a fair bit of heat, we need air con in the lab and a few people complain along the same vein - whinging that it's too cold, with the air con tuned to 23C. Fact is that more people want it on than want it off, and I'll bet the same is true for your work place. There's nothing worse than being acutely aware of how your colleagues smell.

Short story - suck it up, whiner.

Personally I would just deal with it, easier to be cold than hot, obviously not if they are setting it to arctic settings, just like they used to do out here, cue 100 people in a lecture hall wearing coats and blankets which had to be carried to the place in 40 degree heat, great fun.
