As the title says, I hate being networked :(

I have 3 people on the same line as me that like to download/webcam/youtube/myspace. Pretty annoying really, as someone that plays FPS games lol. Seriously considering just having my own line, but we don't have a BT line in the household. Don't know what to do.

Any suggestions? And does anyone else share the same problem as I?

Are you in charge of the router? You could just buy a new router which will allow you to use QoS so that your gaming can have the highest priority.

I have a friend who lives with people like this, but they also use torrents (and I mean like 20 at a time) non-stop too. I think that the only thing you can do is to tell them to stop being selfish or to install netlimiter on all the machines with a reasonable share and make sure there's always 25kb/s or so free out of the total bandwidth.

Depending on your level of technical knowledge and how uncooperative the people you live with are you could use ettercap to poison the ARP table of the switch on the router and then throttle their downloads by forcing them through your PC as their gateway.

Pretty impossible to determine what is happening on an unmanaged switch and as it doesn’t involve any new hardware or changes to your current configuration it wouldn’t be detectable.

If you don't have access to the router or if it doesn't have any QoS for you to set a rule that torrent traffic have lower priorty than other normal traffic.

The easiest way to do it is to ask them to limit their upload speed, the worst thing for a connection is to max your upload as this will slow down your connection to a grind. With a senisble upload limit the downloads should run smoother too.

Also if you could make them have more restrictions on speeds during normal gaming hours it should help with your game pings. Most torrent client's have a scheduler function, I for example have set a rule that ties in with my off peak times meaning during the day I have a 100kb/s down and 15kb/s, and off peak no limit on downloads and 40kb/s up.

QoS probably won't help too much as you've no way of queuing the inbound traffic.

If it's your line then just tell them to stop it or you'll remove their access. If not, then you can't really complain too much as they have just as much right to use it as you.

Maybe you could just get another line?

You need a router that will let you run an expedited forwarding queueing policy on its egress WAN port. You are still likely to get congestion on the PE tho - but that's out of your control.

I guess LFI is another option..

I see you're on cable, can't you just have your own dedicated connection installed from Virgin?
