I hate plumbers

Quote!! Always ask for a quote!!

It is what I always ask before going ahead. Ring around for some quotes.

Of course, it may not be a realistic price but it should give you a rough idea of how much they charge you.

For a new boiler & boiler swap labour, quoting can't be that complicated!

The plumbers a bandit. I got mine swapped similar to yours and a water tank replaced in the airing cupboard for £1200. He did it on a saturday morning. I pre drained everything before he got there and he whipped through it.

Did you pay him cash, phone up the VAT office and grass him up ;)

I agreed on a price before hand. But still I can't swallow it. Too much.
They only took of the old one, some pipe work, drilling some holes etc. and placing it. All these are standard.

All these are standard? I'm so glad you know so much about pipe fitting, I do wonder you didn't do it yourself as you know so much.

No-one on these forums knows what they did for you so saying you've been overcharged, based on assumptions of what they did, is a tad premature.

If you are so livid (after agreeing the price and seemingly not seeking a second opinion) then why not pay a 3rd party to check the work and quote what they would have charged. If there is a big difference you can use this opinion as base for further action.

Or you can whinge, whichever.

On saturday morning Transco visited my 72 year old mother and condemned her boiler and gas fire so she's got no heating and warm water. My best mate runs a local gas company a few doors down from OCUK and he's just rang me to say he's got her heating back on but the fire is condemned.
He quoted £1300 for a new boiler and £500 for removing the old Baxi boiler behind the fire, removing the old fire, doing brickwork and installing a new Valor living flame gas fire.
She is allowed £2700 from Warmfront which is government sponsored and one company just for the boiler quoted her £3214  so she would have to pay £514.

Well next time either know your plumber inside out. Or get British Gas to fit it. Expensive yes. But at least you know its done right.

I hate most tradesmen tbh I can do a better job myself.

I doubt a wall mounted boiler for an average house costs more than £500.
They are much more than that. We got a new potterton on a trade discount, and I think it was £750 or so. I believe they retail at around the £1000 mark.

Theres a little more to the story concerning a cowboy gasman.

Two months ago my mother agreed to wall insulation done by Mark Insulation and it would come out of her Warmfront grant. The insulators came round, did a CO test and said it was too high and they couldn't do it. She'd only just had a gas service two weeks earlier. She called the gasman, he came round and told her he'd fixed the problem. On saturday Mark Insulations came again and they said it was worse and its a wonder she wasn't dead. They said they were obligated to ring Transco who came and did their own readings and condemned the fire and boiler. The gasman had been servicing her boiler and fire for ten years but he'd obviously done nothing.
