The purpose of this thread is simply to allow me to rant so I can feel better.

I hate Royal Mail. I decided to use their Simply Drop service to get rid of my N95 8Gb - they offered £140. Nice.

They sent me a prepaid postage bag and said just pop it in and drop it in the post box.

Well no thanks - I'll pop it in but I'll send it recorded just so I can see it gets there.

It left on the 8th September. It's yet to arrive - because Royal Mail have lost it. I say lost, it's probably been stolen given the ridiculous amount of LOOK THERE IS A MOBILE PHONE IN HERE advertising on the bag they supplied.

And the best bit? Because I didnt give them extra money to protect myself against their incompetence I'll get 37 quid back. Great.

Thats a bit like me asking to borrow your car, smashing it up, and then refusing to pay for it because you didnt pay for 'I am a retard' insurance.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

should've sent it with appropiate insurance, if you want to compare it to cars then your rant is liking complaining that a TPFT policy won't pay for your car to be repaired after you've crashed it into someone else.. just becuase you didn't pay the extra for the appropiate insurance.

Well no, as in your example it is my fault damage occured to the vehicle. I didn't leave the vehicle in somebody elses care :)

I paid them for a service and they lost my property - it wasn't damaged by factors outside their control.

I just cannot get my head around how retarded it is you should have to pay a firm extra to safeguard yourself against that same firms incompetence. To insure yourself against factors outside their control, sure..

Good little earner - profit from peoples fear that you'll trash their stuff. Not bad.

I should start a removal company and charge an extra tenner to cover yourself against me selling your stuff on Ebay for a laugh.

It is an odd situation as you are sending it to royal mail, so why is at your own risk until it is delivered, it's just one part or royal mail giving it to another.

Exactly - when they receive your phone you get sent a text message which you then take to your nearest....

Post Office.

Thats right - I handed it in at the post office and, had they not lost it, I'd go back to the same post office to collect payment....

It's like popping into OcUK to hand your RMA over at the counter, getting proof you gave it to them and then them losing it and telling you to do one because you didn't take out 'losing it in the warehouse' insurance.

You are right - this is an absolutely perfect analogy. This is exactly what they have done and exactly why the whole insurance issue is pretty unreasonable.

You agreed to this when you purchased it, you can't complain when you agreed to it in the first place.

Look you didnt pay me extra when I came round your house to help you move so really its your own fault I flogged all your kit on Ebay and you can only have a refund of £50.

That analogy doesn't really make sense so stop saying it.

How? It's the same thing. I don't mind insuring things against acts of god or outside influences but to have to pay an organisation extra if you want a guarantee they won't screw up what you've asked them to do is ridiculous.

'Certainly we'll fix your car but it'll be an extra £10 an hour if you wish to insure yourself against us dropping things inside your cylinder head or the tea boy stealing your stereo whilst its with us'.

You were aware of more expensive and insurable postal services when you sent off your phone. It's your fault that you didn't select one.

I selected Recorded which is above what the ROYAL MAIL OPERATED phone recycling service told me to do. They told me to simply whack it in the post box!

It's my fault that somebody else lost my property, cool. I deserve to lose my phone.

You're implying by some of your examples that what they've done is deliberate

I'm not going to spell out what I think because it would be libellous but postal worker + sealed bag with HELLO THIS IS A PHONE = ?

I would prefer a sensible pricing structure with guarantees rather than the ridiculous notion of 'Well we can take your money but... dunno....', yes.

50-60p a letter sounds reasonable instead of 30p or whatever it is.

If they can't provide a reliable service at 39p then do not charge 39p. (Although the total cost of my service was about £2.30 or something).

Is there any other business sector that is allowed to limit its liability for negligence unless the customer pays extra? Can't think of any?

Yes but you know full well what you would have said if this was someone elses thread and it wouldn't have been Royal Mails Fault.

Actually I've commented in RM threads on the issue of their compensation policies in the past and my opinion remains unchanged :)
