is it worth spending some money yet ?

unfortunatly i have lost track of technology this year so i thought i'd ask you nice people what and when i should be looking at upgrading my cpu:)

will the quad cores become cheap in a few months ? my bro payed 170 for his q6600 ages ago (over a year i think) and there still over 100 quids now!

Hey MrViper,

Personally I would upgrade most of that hardware you had, not just for some extra performance but also better power efficiency and the fact that I actually enjoy tearing a PC to pieces and building it back togther again with a few new shinys! :D

If your the sort of user that doesn't like to upgrade that much then maybe sit it out for a while until the new Intel® Core™ i7 stuff starts popping up over the next few months hopefully, either you can build a next gen platform of pick up some great value used kit from other users who are selling up to Beta test the latest Intel® platform and processor tech.

If you have cash burning in your pocket and fancy a little upgrade then maybe picking up a new GPU could be a good move? The newish ATI Radeon™4800 series (HD4850, HD4870) have been received well by most forum users as has the nVidia Gefore 2000 series . . . . then sell your old card to recover some costs!

Mobo wise the new Intel® P45 Express Chipsets are excellent as are the latest 45nm Intel® Core™ 2 processors, Wolfdale dual cores and Yorkfield quad cores . . .

Some great stuff to play with, extra performance and less power consumption! :)

I'd say leave it. wait until more actual new tech is out rather than the mainly die shrinks and refreshes are out now. the 8800GTX is still a great card in many respects.

If you have cash burning, I'd suggest looking into a couple of terabyte drives perhaps, for increased storage.

Gonna echo the leave it crowd, upgrade when Nehalem & the new Phenoms arrive, the 5800 cards will probably be out by then and your current rig is still very relevant.

No there's no gains to be made from a [email protected] for gaming and most other usage.
Might want to get a 4870 though but even then all the games aren't coming until dec/jan.
