i posted in this topic because i first thought it was a game problem
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17828775

i was having problems with oblivion randomly crashing & i thought it was a software problem but later i realised that the power connector in the box had attachments for 2 cables & the one i had been using only had one

i attached this pic so you will understand what i mean as i dont know the correct names :p
the cable that my game was crashing with only had one of those white connectors but the cable that came with the new card has 2 & its not crashing anymore since i put that one in

the question i have is will it be ok to have this cable set up as i have it now?

i only had one power cable with nothing connected to it (the one from my old 7800gtx) so one of the connectors is being shared with my dvd drive

You need both, use a splitter to share a power connection between one of your harddrives and the dvd drive in question, then use the connector freed up by that to power the card along with the one you are already using.

I wouldn't recommend using a splitter to power the card + another device, the card should really have its own separate power rails.

thanks mate, my psu is in such a mess and it was a struggle to get it as it is now because of all the fans in my case, do you think this would be ok for now untill i can afford a new psu?
if you could recommend a decent modular one for around £80 it would be great

Well, it depends on the wattage/make of your current PSU, if its a high wattage (580+) it should be ok unless its a rubbish make.

Being a OCZ fanboy the obvious choice of PSU for me would be

600W should be more than enough.

thanks :) my psu is a Thermaltake Purepower 560W Psu
is the one you suggested modular? im terrible at keeping the case tidy so id much rather go for one with detachable cables if i can :p
i had to get a friend to install my current psu because of this

Ah sorry, forgot to take modular into consideration. IIRC Thermaltake are actually quite a good brand so you may not even need to change the psu (anyone else with more knowledge would be able to confirm that). If you really feel you need an upgrade to a modular PSU then anything by a well known brand in the 550->620W area should be fine.

One that caught my eye was:

thanks for all the help mate :) i might stick with what i have for now if its a decent make

ill open up the case later and see what i can do with it, i know that my 2 hdd connectors are sata so i cant share them with the dvd drive but maybe i could share one of the fans with it instead :)

that psu you gave me the link to looks like it would be perfect but if i can get away with not spending anything i will :p
