Greetings,

This is my Personal Computer specification;

x 1 - DFI LanParty UT NF4 SLI-D (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard

x 1 - GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3

I've recently bought a 8800GTS and wish to upgrade my computer. Should I buy some more RAM to take it up to 4gig? or would I be best investing in some different faster ram ?

Please help me as I have a little bit of money to spend on ram (to give my pc alittle boost, i guess) and have no idea which ram to buy or if just to upgrade...

Thank You inadvance.

I wouldn't spend money on DDR1, It's expensive. I would either make do or put the money towards a c2d/dd2 setup

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/search_results.php That stuff doesn't sound very expensive, would it go with my PC?

I'm afraid your search doesn't work for me, it states that the search term is too short. Did you perhaps mean the OcUK 2gb kit? If so that is compatible but DDR is significantly more expensive than DDR2 since you can pick up a decent 2gb kit of the latter for ~£30. You might also have to bear in mind that without a 64bit OS you will only see somewhere approaching 3.5gb of Ram.

So why don't I just get some DDR2? I mean i'd have to throw out by old stuff but surely 2 gig of DDR2 would be better than what I got now and give me a better more stable pc and a better FPS right?

Not with that motherboard or CPU you can't I'm afraid as they are DDR only so you've got to decide if you want to spend the ~£150ish for a new motherboard, CPU and Ram or just accept that you can upgrade the Ram at the moment for ~£60 but will have to write it off as old technology after this point.

The Core2Duos are very very good at overclocking however, only point to note is that you might need to upgrade your PSU as well if it isn't solid.

I wouldn't the cost to performance ratio would be dire compared to what else you can get for the same price. Plus youd need vista 64bit or xp 64bit to get it all.

Really, what would you recommend getting then ? I'm afraid fps increase mostly, and my 8800 is coming today! (Going from a 7800gt)

Only thing you could do with the ram is to sell and get some cas2 pc3200 sticks (or may cas 2.5 pc4000) instead but performance increase would be minimal....though if you were lucky cost would be near the same :)

What speed do you run the cpu at? Best thing to do is to overclock it which might (ie def) need an uprated cooler to keep temps down. If you choose a good cooler thats fits other sockets too then it will do for when you upgrade in the future :)

If it turns out to be a bad clocker you could sell and get maybe £30-35 for it and pick up a good clocking opty 165 for about £45ish. (MM prices)

Going from 2.2GHz to 2.9GHz (ish) should help get a bit more out of the 8800gts.

Interested to know how it performs with you rig as hoping to get one in a few weeks :)

I would go for the overclocking option as the poster before said...

No need to spend too much money ona new set up now, you are not that far behind the technology curve

I just upgraded from basically where you are. I purchased a E2180, P31 gigabyte MB I got on the cheap from a friend and 2 gigs of DDR2 and have a 8800GT that will be here monday or Tuesday and it was money well spent. I picked up the cpu,mb and ram for dirt cheap really but it really depends on how much you have to spend.

A ballpark price range would really help.

I had 2x 512mb Geil PC3200 and upgraded to 4x512 recently for £30 from a popular auction sight (prolly less than that now) and was pleasantly surprised by the upgrade, it will give you more life in your old system without full upgrade and for instance i load into BF2 maps at least twice as fast now and no more in game lag! and its only £30 and will mean your system is a decent second system when u finally do a full upgrade. ;)
