I have absoultely no idea...

Would want something for about AROUND the £300 mark I guess. Want something futureproof. I would have to pay a computer shop to fit the mobo and shizzle too because I can't do that stuff and I suppose I would need a new power supply because mine is like 550w max :) thanks

Fitting it yourself is actually really simple, there are plenty of guides on the internet and people on the Forums can help if you get stuck.

The parts below should be suitable for what you require, I've left some room in the budget for fitting though if necessary.

Infact,

Can you spec me something with dual core, 4gig of ram and a futureproof motherboard for like £350-400 I guess.

How much could I sell my old x4200 AMD, operton 144, 7800gt gfx and ram and mobo for ? like £100 ?

Why dont you save up for a bigger+better build later on?

DDR3 is still to become mainstream, new quadcores based on wolfdales will be released shortly, new chipsets, and not to mention the whole new architecture that is Nehalem which will be available on 4th quarter of 2008. Save money and buy a nehalem system when they first come out. At least you will have something to brag about, not to mention cutting edge at that time.

And if you want to buy now, you should buy an X38 or an 780i based motherboard, at least to have PCI-E 2.0 for fututre graphics card updates. Go for the Quad as well, it should end up being more future proof compared to a dual core IMO. 2x2 GB of RAM for 4 Total and a future expansion to 8GB.
