That would be why they're rolling out ADSL2+, albeit slowly, with a trial running for the last 4 months, 84 exchanges enabled in the beginning of May and the rest coming over the next few years.
On the other hand, I'd agree that BT Wholesale ADSL isn't the place to be if you want to download much but don't want to pay for it - the costs involved for the ISP quickly get crazy.

BT Wholesale aren't the only ADSL provider either - there's plenty of LLU options available that offer ADSL2+ and will let you download the internet for pennies a month.

That doesn't get around the issue that even on ADSL2+ you still hit a brick wall as soon as you get a good distance away from the exchange. If you have both cable and ADSL available to you then there's a very good chance that cable will offer you the faster connection. Whether it lives up to the claims or not remains to be seen as the free upgrades roll out, but from a technology based view cable has the capacity to go quicker.

and i don't know why ppl dump on virgins cable service, if you're on a good non-oversubscribed UBR the service is miles ahead of what you will ever get on ADSL.

That's easier said than done though My brother's VM cable connection is STMd at the "normal" hours as well as receiving a blanket speed cut (no matter how little he's downloaded) for four extra hours a day. That means even if he downloads NOTHING in a day, then goes to use his connection, he'll get 512k between 4pm and midnight.

VM's explanation? Too many downloaders in his town, so he has to be capped to account for them. Nice, considering he's still paying full whack for the 20Mbps

I'm with UK Online ADSL2+ and SYNC between 20.5 and 22Mbps. My throughput is around 2.5MB/sec (2,500 KB/sec) 24/7 with NO STM, NO THROTTLING and NO LIMITS. I download 500+GB a month at full speed (no time restrictions etc) and only pay £24 a month to do so.

I agree with the distance to exchange thing, but then, I just moved closer to the exchange LOL

I never denied that. It was directed at this:

If you're within range you can get as much, if not more (not counting the upload speed, where cable really loses out), than you can get from cable - especially if the UBR is oversubscribed.
