i have being hacked!!

Most likely a trojan, i would have reinstalled windows in your situation as well, you just can't be sure if you've got rid of it or not. I did that a lot when i was 15 too :)

Now though i backup at the end of every week, i wouldn't fancy reinstalling my whole windows os these days considering how much i have on it

thank you, at least this guy knows what he's talking about and isn't being a dick like 1-2 of you (i know its harsh but im only 15 so can't be expected to know everything and don't expect people to take the ****, im on here to learn stuff and those that want to just take the **** out of a 15yr old kid then your sad! end of!). I ended up re-installing windows. I think it may have being a virus of somekind as when i logged onto msn it went through all my contacts and typed something very quickly and a mate who recieved that said he had got a virus off it.

i have a linksys router and yes you can disable the wireless

No probs. If you have backed any software up that you are going to install again on your clean install make sure you virus check it first.

Lots of viruses/trojans etc etc can act like stealthy remote access software, like a "dodgy" version of VNC and those types of legitimate software. Thats why some people thought someone was messing about on your network. They just must not be aware of what some trojans actually are/do.

Do regular virus scans, keep the definitions updated, use a good free firewall, don't just click accept to anything that wants network access and don't just click on any old links. ;)

I've never seen a router that allows you to turn off the wireless. You have a netgear, yes? What model?
I've not seen a router you can't turn the wireless off :) Most have option to turn the access point off.

my post was constructive too

don't make such a lame title next time

I know you said your router's wireless connection has been disabled, but does your computer have a wireless network card installed? If so, is it enabled?

You don't necessarily need a router to connect to another computer which has a wireless network card.

^^^ no i used to use external USB one called 'linksys WUSB54GS

i have re-installed windows but i still have old data one there (through documents and settings) how do i completly re-format the HDD so there is nothing at all on there?

Put in your windows xp install cd. Start the computer, boot from cd (it should say press any key to boot from cd - if it doesnt then you need to go into your bios and look for boot devices, change the first one to cd).

When you go through all the installation startup process and you get to the drive select screen, choose the drive you want to install and then choose format quick or full depending if you want it to check for errors.

When you do an upgrade install IIRC it doesn't format it like you want to. Try the way I said.

yeah i tried removing the parition but stupid me paritioned the whole drive (when i first built the comp) and the only partition is an 8mb one which windows uses for something, other than that there's a 7 thousand odd mb in one partition which stores my os, files evverything and i can't delete it because window says it needs it to use some temporary files to complete installation.
Is there any way around this?
and how many times am i allowed to install windows on my pc as i heard there's a limit

it hasn't worked because of things running in the background, tings that i can't stop without the computer shutting down (i dont think so anyway) with all the disk on 1 partition

That's because you're trying to format from inside Windows, you have to boot from the XP cd as GraemeUK says. When you choose where to install Windows, you have the option to delete your old partitions and create new ones. I can't tell if you're aware from what you've posted, but this will get rid of everything on the drive, so make sure you've made a back-up of anything you want to keep.

mike1210's link explains it all step-by-step, and has screenshots as well.

You said earlier that you had already reinstalled Windows, by that did you mean you pressed 'R' at the prompt 'to repair a windows xp installation using the recovery console'?

Dont format the c:\ within windows, this is most likely where windows is installed and the end result would just be terrible. If you want to re-install windows use on official windows cd and follow the instructions on screen. BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST!

192.168.1.2 is a local address as many have said. It is not coming from the internet. The threat will be within 50 metres of that router. I suspect you PC has had a VNC server installed. In simple terms, this is a program that will run in the background and allow a user with a VNC client to control your PC from another location as if it were there infront of them. Follow these steps to stop the threat if what is suspected by myself is true:

1) click start > run > appwiz.cpl > ok (this brings up add or remove programs), have a look for anything with the word VNC in it and remove any if you see them)

2) Hold down ctrl + alt + del on you keyboard. This will bring up the windows task manager, Click on processes, again look for something with the word "VNC" in it. If you find somehting move to step 3.

3) Click start > run > msconfig > ok (now click the tab labled as "startup" and untick anything that says VNC. Now click the tab services, check the tickbox next to hide microsoft services and again, untick anything saying VNC)

I hope the above does it for you. If not post back. If the above does it for you still post back. I can show you a few tricks to find out who it was so you can confront them.

Hmm, I'm a little confused.

So at the prompt to select where you want to install windows, you selected your c: partition, but you didn't format it first? It sounds like you have installed xp onto the same partition twice...

This would mean you would most likely have a folder on the root of c:\ (what happens when you go start > my computer > c:\) named windows2 or similar. Just a way of checking.
