I Have The iRiver H140 - Do I Need To Upgrade

I've had the H140 for about 18 months now and am generally very happy with it, apart from it's size, which is rather annoying at times.

What is there out there that would be small enough to make a difference, but still has a remote, FM, sound quality must be high, as I don't want to waste my E4c's, drop and drag in Windows. Are there any developments in the DAP field that I've missed and would like.

I've not really thought about the video side of things, because I can't really see the point, with a screen that small.

Cheers chaps/chappesses. :)

what sort of storage size are you looking at? nothing from iriver's current range stands up to the h140, and i wouldn't put any ipod up there either. Something like the iaudio m5 would make a cracking player if you can live with a 20gb device and no radio (the m5L has a 35hour battery life as well). Or there is the more expensive x5 with a colour screen, 15fps mpeg4 support and radio that is available in 20gb and 30gb sizes.

Personally 2gb is enough for me, so im looking at replacing my h10 5gb with a 2gb monolith mx7000

I am also looking at the Creative Zen Vision M, which seems to be getting good reviews, although the dock does seem an odd idea and there's no remote included, but I could get that afterwards.

I'll look at the X5 as well, cheers. :)

Id keep the iRiver - rockbox it!

Theres no point upgrading unless you want something smaller.

The sound on the H120/140 is still better than 95% of mp3 players out there!

I'm starting to think that the only benefit that I could make from upgrading, is the divx playback, as most other DAP's seem to be of a similar size and weight to the H140, but I can't find many that have a decent battery life, remote and FM tuner, all of which I couldn't be without now.

I've also tried Rockbox, but I can't really find any real benefit, apart from the superior boot up time and gapless playback, but since it won't play wma, it's no good for me, as I don't want to re-encode about 30g. Have the tuner and remote functions improved lately?

I really think you should wait till end of year.

Vision:M is an option - but only if you want to watch films! I have one and I think its a good unit but not as good as its made out to be. Videos are good, but sometimes bass distorts. And I scrached it with a lint free cloth!

Samsung J70 (check out my review) and iAudio x5 is not a big enough step up really - their vidio play back is poor.

If you got upgraditus then get yourself a pair of Westone UM2 inear head phones for £150 - They are best buy Ive made in a long while! They make my Sony EX71s sound like they came from a £1 shop.

what about the Creative Zen Vision:M? 30gb, radio, divx playback, better battery life than an ipod video and a better screen as well, and of course its drag and drop. No remote, but its a real option

I mentioned that one earlier mate and it does look like an option, but the only advantage would be the divx playback, so I'm not too sure whether it's worth losing 10g for.

I may wait a bit longer, since there isn't anything out there much better than what I have already.

I'm more than happy with my E4c's mate and I don't think the UM2's would be that much better, if actually better at all. :)

The UM2's have a lot more bass... I found the e4's to be a little thin and bright.

They do lack a little in the bass department, otherwise I think they're superb.

Would you think I'd appreciate the Vision M, after the H140, because the Divx option does seem attractive to me, although I'd miss the remote quite a lot, even though I think you can get one, it's not LCD though and the connectors not part of the unit is a stupid idea, how does the dock work to you?

I just keep the dock connected to the usb cable at all times so Its not an issue with me. The Zen remote seems a good piece of kit and can both change from mp3 to radio etc as well as all the useral stuff.

My honest opinion is that you may miss the bass punch of the iRiver. I just cant get the same level of bass out of my Zen as I can get with my iRiver. But I am talking about extreem bass boosting.

How does the ZVM sound? It sounds exactly like a good PC sound card! Better than my SoundBlaster Live, but on par with the Nforce sound systems and Toshiba laptop I own. The Vision:M has a big warm wide open sound (bigger than the iRiver) - esp if you use the US firmware it will go very loud. Im just dissapointed that bass when pushed on bass heavy tracks distorts a bit. Un-EQ’ed, it sounds better than most mp3 players out there. It sounds very warm and big, but almost too “loud”. However, the bass seems to be a little lacking (even on my UM2’s). Creative have added a “Bass Boost” and an “user EQ” – both can be used at same time. The bass boost seems a bit odd as its mostly upper bass, but with some songs it works very well – others it destroys! Its best to keep the "bass boost" off. The EQ is 5 band -/+ 12 db’s.

If you add “Bass boost” and EQ at same time what you get is unforgivable for a player in this day and age. Have you ever heard one of those £20 hifi systems you can get – turn up volume and mega distortion! That’s what the ZVM sounds like! It’s a bit of a shock considering how good the rest of the sound is! This distortion is audible at any volume so it nothing to do with the amp in the Zen (which is very powerfull if you have non EU firmware) – but the pre-amp in the chipset. It is set too high! If you record music, you want to set the recording volume a bit lower – so if there’s any sudden dynamics it wont distort. If you set it higher you may get a more impressive sound, but at times it will sound clipped. Same with HiFi’s. Good amp’s have a lot of reserve power so that it can cope with sudden dynamics. This is the main problem with the ZVM – its pre amp is too loud – there’s nothing in reserve in case of sudden dynamics. Everything sounds on the wire with the ZVM – congested at times – if only creative lowered the pre amp it would allow the Zen to “breath” more.

I still think the best sounding mp3 player I have is the iPaq 4150 (uses the same audio chipset as H140) but it just sounds so much better. It can produce so much *undistorted non boomy bass* that my my UM2's move in my ears and my eyes wobble :o bliss BTW im a trained classical musician if your wondering lol

My advice is to keep the iRiver for music - and get a PMP for video's dew to larger screen.

However the Vision:M is not a bad buy, For most people they will find it fantastic. The unit is not as thick as it looks. I have no problem with thickness - It holds well in the hands.

BTW the Zen is drag n drop out of the box - no drivers or software needed if you run Win XP.

Apart from the occasional “terrible” sound, the player is impressive - I would like it to have more "deep bass grunt"!– I personally like file-tree navigation better. They video top notch – I watched 2 films back to back yesterday on the train and found the small screen not to be a problem.

I am thinking about this ZVM now to replace my H320, it's size has always bugged me a bit and this looks right up my street, i'm no audiophile but I do want good sounds and I need drag and drop. Problem is I would want a decent sell on price for mine, it's the US version so i'm not sure what I could expect really.

Its only drag n drop if you have windows media player10 installed. Win XP only!
