Ok so im pretty much constantly trying to fix my network at home, not so much the internet sharing but the shared folders etc, i never seem to get it working for more than a day!

My current problem is i cannot connect to a computer using its name, i have to use the ip address. I also cannot browse the computers in the 'view workgroup computers' bit as 'i dont have permission', yes i ****** do!

Any ideas hwat i could be doing wrong? All computers are on XP Pro, i have disabled all the firewalls etc and everything is connected to a router.

Ok do this:

1) Make sure both machines have the same workgroup name
2) Make sure both admin accounts have same username and password
3) Disable simple file sharing

Now with those 3 things done browsing the machines should be no problem at all.

Thats how theyre running atm :(

I will try the suggestion of running the wizard, see where that gets me :)

Deffinitely have simple file sharing disabled?

Also what do you have in your DNS settings on the machines?

If you go to command prompt and type "ping computer1" (replace computer1 with the machine name) then do you get a reply?

Number 2 doesn't make much sense, I have a network here and at Uni and none of them have the same admin username/password yet they work fine?

To the OP, do you have a firewall? I find that you get the permission denied if there's a FW in the way of things.

am guessing your in a domain though?

if you had seperate admin usernames and passwords then you would have to enter them each time the machine booted so that you could access the remote machine.

Right i can ping the ip address of the other machine, however i cannot ping the computers name :S Not sure what this means.

 missed that.

What firewall is it? Some don't properly switch off (like Zone Alarm).

Can you connect to a machine using its IP (ie start, run, cmd, \\[IP])?

I managed to solve it, after hours of trolling through the microsoft knowledgebase....3 ports, 137,138 and 139 which are all to do with NETBIOS. I just had to stop blocking them on my router and all was good, everything works fine now. Im just confused as to why they arent controlled by UPnP which would hav emade my life a whole lot easier!

Unless you're doing something odd with the router, you shouldn't have to open ports - and you definitely don't want to be opening them to the internet.

Well it didnt work before and it does now, is there another way i could have solved it then cos obviously id rather not be open to the internet.

Unless the router's firewalling between the LAN ports, or you're trying to go through the router, that doesn't apply.

No domain, workgroups. Usernames and passwords should have no effect on sharing of folders.
