Every time i try to open either of them, I get the screen with the bald guy with a tap, then the scree with a logo and some white writing. All standard.

all of a sudden, my screen then goes blank and after 3 secs, i get an error message saying "Hl2.exe has stopped working"
Windows checks for a solution but NEVER finds one.

It's the same to this thread I found when scouring the web:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/103323-25-win7-counter-strike-source-crash

I have two monitors and 2 GTX 570's.

Tried all the advice in that thread to no avail :(

Ho do I force the games to start up in 1920x 1080?

Thanks in advance

Have you verified the game cache? Usually sorts out some problems with loading steam games for me.

I am also getting HL2.exe is not responding on TF2, but i am getting into the games and it happens after playing for a while. It has happened about 3-4 times today on TF2

I had this problem too, Cleeecooo, though it eventually sorted itself out. I think I verified the cache at least three times due to some dude on the Steam forums recommending it. Either way, it seemed to work or it was simply a timely fluke as Valve updated things, I don't know.

Thanks for the responses. I really can't wait much longer for this as I need to get my intensive training back up so that I can finally kill 5UB. just one headshot an ill be happy!!!

Right click game in steam, properties, launch options, type: "-novid" without the quotes.

See if that works.

Right click the appropriate game in your steam library and click on Properties, then navigate to Set Launch Options and add the following to it.

-h 1080 -w 1920

not working :(

Haven't read that thread but have you tried with just one monitor or without SLI enabled?

Stab in the dark but hey!

Also, just thought, have you tried verify / reinstalling half life 2? As those games use some bits from that (don't wanna get too technical there ;)).

Have you played these games before successfully?

Because if you've tried uninstalling/reinstalling them, you need to physically delete out the files from your steam folder, as it keeps some config files and downloaded files, which is where the error could be coming from.

Can't remember!

Beena while since I've played!

How to I get rid of all the files?

Program files/Steam/Steam apps/

There will be some files here, probably called "Team fortress 2.gcf" and "Counter strike.gcf". Delete them all.

Program files/Steam/Steam apps/(Your username)/Team fortress 2
Program files/Steam/Steam apps/(Your username)/Counter Strike

Delete all the files/folders in these 2 folders.

Then re-install and see if they run.
