I just don't understand the appeal of steam?

I'm a lazy ass and cant be bothered to go to the shop and lack the patience to wait for things to arrive, so I can buy and download and be playing a few minutes later.

That's a complete non-argument. It's like saying someone is lazy because they buy carrots in Tesco instead of taking the time to grow them.

Disk based PC games that aren't linked to any sort of client are so outdated, they are horrible.

Console disk based games are different, at least they all have a standard format and are patched via PSN or Live.

I like to buy certain franchises on disc, but for everything else Steam rocks! I never really buy anything on it throughout most of the year, but when they have sales on some of the prices are ridiculous.

Just got Star Wars Dark Forces for 87p. It's like the Asda of digital distribution!

My games are all available from one place.
My games are all available from any PC.
My games are all available within minutes of reinstalling an OS
My games are all automatically updated to the latest version, saving hours of searching for and installing patches.
My games are often cheaper than retail, as Steam have regular sales

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on Steam. I hated having to keep all the discs and boxes safe somewhere. It causes so much clutter and looks a mess tbh. The only games I buy on discs now are games that you cannot get from a download client (which now adays is very rare) or collectors editions that I want.

But imo the best answer is that first line, "my games are all available from one place" I have all my games there I can look through the list and just spot a game and think ooo havnt played that for a while. Click play and boom straight into a game. I dont have to look at a bookcase full of boxes and then hope that the disc works, or that the disc is even there and if I even have the game still installed, then the hassle of getting it up to date.

Its a lot like my music collection now. Everything is on my PC. I dont want disks cluttering my house. Photos on my PC saves me storing hard copies of them. If I want ones printed I can print them at home and display them.

My PC is a complete media hub for me and it saves so much room than having to keep discs and boxes stored in my house when it can all be stored on my PC and a small external drive as backup.

It is by far the best game rental system available today

Customer support is a bit poor , methinks who ever reads their reports , English sure aint
their first language

I don't think you should criticize people who aren't fluent in English due to them not being from England when from what it seems you are suggesting that you are yet you don't have proper punctuation.

I never mentioned England , just the apparent inability to understand written english from the steam support people.

For example

You send a message to steam support:
"I have tried the fix 1 as described on this webpage http://someurl.com
but the game is still not working. Can you help me with this problem"

and their reply is:
"Have you tried fix 1 on this webpage http://someurl.com"

Would it unwarranted to say that maybe they are not getting the point ?

To be fair... your grasp of the written English language doesn't appear tip top either. :o

I only have one game on Steam- Il2:CloD, and its... all right I guess- autoupdates and everything.
However, for games that require MODs (like SH5 say) steam should be avoided like plague.

Why so?

I get it for things like GTA4 where the mods require a specific version, but things like Skyrim and FO3 I've never had a problem with...

Tons of games are fine for mods on Steam. Don't generalise based on one game.

Heck, what do you think they're trying to do with Steam Workshop?

I stand corrected then:)

But still, we have GTA4 and SH5 already that are better steam-less for modding... Il2:1946 was another game whose MODs clashed with steam, so... So I guess the message is- if you plan to mod, check for MODs+steam compatibility.

I purchased a retail version of GTA4, I very quickly grew tired of having the DVD in my drive at all times. So I purchase it on Steam when it was on offer.

I was happy to pay the £5 just to get rid of the damn disk.

This pretty much, my brother hates steam however iv had no issues with it really, not massive issues anyway. I <3 steam

have had steam since 2004 when you could get half life 2 on pre-order, so i could play before the retail launch.

tbh i prefer to buy retail disc copies + they are much cheaper than steam rip off prices.

as for the arguments it's available on any pc, i just play on my gaming PC and dont need to have it on a netbook. as for auto patching, most games do that automatically anyway when you go online.

also a pain to have to redownload gigs of the game everytime you want to reinstall it. i just prefer popping in the disc and go straight to install.

i don't hate steam, but honestly have no real use for it. i don't need the extra spyware, and honestly sick of always signing in to play a sp game. although nowadays with origin, uplay etc.. it is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid :(

What Spyware? OH right, I thought you were being serious.

Why do you delete steam anyway, just install your OS and then run it
