I Keep Getting MBR Errors

Hi everyone. I keep getting MBR error messages when I boot. They seem to happen sporadically. They started happening either since I signed up for the Windows 10 free upgrade, that might just be a coincidence though.

Anyway, its annoying, when it happens I use another SSD I had with an old version of my OS, I put that in, reboot a few times. Leave the PC for 5 mins, put the original drive in and it works for a while. Then some must happen and we go back to square one.

My specs are below. I have been meaning to upgrade for a while as my MOBO and COU are getting on in years. I dont think they are the problem though. The only thing I can think of is that I have not updated the BIOS on the MOBO for years, but I have never had any issues.

I tried to create a recovery USB but I am unable, it says the files are not available on the HDD.

Any advice would be welcome.

Hi there,

Is your operating system on a HDD or SSD - it is not clear from your description? In either case if the MBR is throwing errors then it is most likely in the case of HDD some of the first sectors on the HDD have gone bad, or if it is SSD then your SSD could be failing. Have you tried a Full format on the disk causing the problem and then replacing an image of your op sys, progs, files etc back on? If you have not got an image or backup of your system - you could make one with Macrium reflect free edition(Google it) and then do as above.

Thanks for quick reply . The Os is on SSD it a Kingston drive. I'm going to get another now from micro centre. How will I get win 8 on it? I upgraded from 7 and now can't create a recovery usb

If I'm reading it right:

You swop hard-drives and then it works?

If so this is not an MBR issue - if it was an MBR issue then you'd have to repair it to fix which would point to something changing the MBR (i.e. virus, etc.)

It sounds like a hardware problem - have you disk checked the drive, updated the SSD's firmware, BIOS, etc.?

What happens if you boot with just the ssd plugged in and no secondary drives or usb sticks?

I'm thinking bios boot order
