I decided to install a bit of software to unpack a file. I lt was literally called file unpacker and quickly I noticed that my browser had changed to something called vi view after the install so I decided to use revo uninstaller to remove the unwanted files.

During the process of uninstalling it removed all shortcuts and profile settings. I am now locked out of my profile for windows 7.

Everything was in my recycle bin but it just wouldn't restore the files so I logged into safe mode restored the files that way but it still wont let me in. It just keeps looping, loggin in/ logging out.

Luckily there is nothing of major importance on my main internal drives but I believe they are both infected to an extent.

What's the best way forward guys? If I revert to a previous restore point will I lose anything?

Thanks

I was trying out a emulator, how much can I say on this subject? The link was via the website to unpack the downloaded file. I so sure it said file unpacker.

I'm such an idiot I know too well not to click this stuff.

Have you tried a system restore?

No restore points unfortunately. I've also tried safe mode last known good option but nothing happens. Whatever this thing did has wiped out W7. Its useless.

A fresh install seems the way to go to be safe.

run malwarebytes on the system, I use this at work and its quite good at removing stuff.

some things awill appear under programs and features so remove anything from there that you didn't want installed.

Quicker to format - you can go through Malwarebytes, etc. but still not have 100% confidence with it.

By the time you've done that you could have reinstalled Windows and be through the best part of the Windows Update. Just remember to image it this time.

Unfortunately no. yet another mistake on my part.

I have my main drive split for W7 and W8. if I load into W8 can I format the W7 part of it in my computer??

Yes if Windows 7 is on other partition. Don't forget to recover important files from Windows 7 into Windows 8 partition if necessary before format Windows 7.
