The royal family make the medals your granddads and great granddads (assuming your a kid) earned in the war valid and meaningful. They fought for king and country. Of what relevance would a medal be if it had tony Blair or the new guys name on it!
 
A lot of people are particularly ignorant of what the royal family do for this country, they just see some rich people in a big house and start coming out with jealous rantings about how they are living off our taxes.
 
Anyone wanting to watch the BBC programme about the Monarchy can watch it on BBC iPlayer. (you don't need to download anything, you can stream it - a la YouTube). Gives a little insight into the work each person carries out. I watched it the other day and thought that others may be interested:

Agreed.
The people who sit and rant vs the monarchy are ungrateful and ignorant. Above all though it's the common social and material jealousy which plagues humanity. Its unavoidable and will never change. Easier by far to question and knock something like the monarchy and perhaps tradition than to defend it.

I struggle to see the difference between the royals and any other celebrity. The only real difference is while most celebrities are famous for being on big brother or some other such garbage, the royals are famous because they happen to be related to monarchs of old. Like any celebrity they can generate cash from people who take an interest ( for whatever reason ) and are prepared to travel around the country just to see them. So If being a glorified celebrity is what people mean by work fine maybe we should make jade goody a royal for the same reason.

While i don't care one way of the other, the problem i see with the monarchy is it that it seems to totally contradict ideas meritocracy and instead bolsters an outdated class systems.

so true, the royal family has lead this country for hundreds of years and because of them we are where we are now. our royalty works damn hard but that is irrelevant, the current royals inherited everything; the money, the tradition, the responsiblity and good on them, our country wouldnt be what it is today without that family and who out of every single one of us, wouldnt carry on hundreds of years of their personal families traditions/beliefs, not many i can bet.
 
yeah cos celebrities go on diplomatic outings to other countries' leaders and royals all the time :\

You're right, that's all the royal family have ever done. Jade Goody would indeed be a more than adequate replacement. I hope one day I'll be informed enough to take a stand on such issues, like yourself.

Lol how predictable. I knew someone would latch onto that line and use it as an excuse to rubbish the post. The bit about jade goody was intended as a throwaway bit of hyperbole to drive home my point. But i guess what i should have said is we may as well make any respectable, dignified and humanitarian celebrity type figure royal

But on second thoughts, maybe i wasn't that far off the mark with the jade comment after all. Is jade really that mush worse than prince harry for instance? Swastika armbands anyone?

Hmm...who would be better to meet with leaders of other countries, be diplomatic, play key roles in ceremonies that are part of our country's heritage, provide a unique mixture of formal and informal channels into the government and represent our country in its interactions with other countries?

That choice is about as difficult as deciding whether to drink some decent coffee or rancid donkey urine with your breakfast.

The monarch nowadays needs a great deal of subtlety, patience, acting ability and decorum. Jade Goody has very little of any of those things.

The royal family is a massive asset to the country. They bring in a huge amount of money, they provide diplomatic and political options that would otherwise be impossible and they are part of our heritage. It would be extremely foolish to ruin such a valuable asset for no purpose and without any benefit.
