Seems to have become trendy, or more like an annoying bad habit, for people, mostly younger people, to begin a vocal reply with I mean. I'm hearing it with so many people being interviewed on the radio and tv.

"When do you think life will become normal again since the corona virus?"
" I mean, the... "

"How long do you think Boris Johnson will keep his position as PM?"

" I mean, it's likely that..."

It's kind of like the british version of the americans starting every reply with " So,.. "

Thought I'd just run that by you all. I mean, you wanted to know this right?

I mean it used to be:
"umm ....., umm... "
or
"you know ....., you know...."
I mean I might have some word that I also repeat quite often :O

If we're going to go for irritating word usage, I have an unnecessary hatred of politicians or management using the word "Robust". "Robust Negotiations" "Robust Response" "Robust Plan". Right, so typical meaningless speak then.

Can't say I'd noticed 'I mean...' creeping in but I'm sure I will now. I had noticed things like 'Well...' and 'Let me start by saying...' responses. I get it's about stalling for time while you compose your response but it can get annoying once you tune into it.

In the rare event that someone takes a moment to consider the question, they're opening themselves up to 'so and so left DUMBFOUNDED when SLAMMED by difficult question' if they're any kind of public figure.

Agreed, really annoying. I also hate when people say, "being honest with you." What, are you not honest for every other part of the conversation?!

Americans saying "I'll go ahead and click." Why not just say, "I'll click..."

Idiots

Was literally shouting at someone about this the other day.

Starting a sentence with "I mean" with no prior context should be punishable by fish vindaloo.

It sounds wrong but it's uber common, just look at Reddit - people start sentences with I mean... could just not type it and your point remains intact.

Americans also think "I could care less" is right... 'nuff said.

They pay a think tank huge amount of money to come up with the new 'buzz' words to hammer points across.

i've noticed it's usually used by folk who think they are very clever or are trying to impose their (usually wrong) point of view or opinion.

i mean i get what you're saying but......
i mean you could look at it this way instead.....

no you **** i won't, so **** off and stop being a failed smart ass before i insert my boot into your 'kyhber'.....and i *******mean that :p:p

This phenomenon has begun to manifest itself within some of the chat messages with my work colleagues. They are a good 20 years my juniors so such outlandish behaviour is both understood and tolerated.
