I need a new bed - advice please!

So I'm upgrading to a small double bed. Woop woop

My current bed is only a couple of years old and nothing wrong with it - But single bed = fail.

Few questions, is there anywhere that will take my old bed for a decent discount on a new one? I think originally my folks paid about £400-£500 for it

Or would I be better off eBaying the bugger and then using the money I get to contribute/pay for a new one?

Also, what kind of mattress should I go for? or avoid? there loads and its confusing!

only way to know what feels nice is to try it.
why move up to a small double? if you have the room then get a bigger bed as they arent that much more expensive tbh.

we have just purchased a king divan with a pocket sprung + memory foam top mattress - medium firm.
The feel of this one was more firm than some and more soft than others claiming to be in the same 'medium firm' range.

Open sprung, pocket sprung, foam, memory foam blah blah blah. it all makes a difference.

So, only way to tell is go and lay on some :p
 
IKEA for the simple reason that their beds are European sized which means they are an extra 10cm or so wider than a standard UK double. They do a decent range of matresses as well and none of it will really break the bank.
 
As for matress I highly recommend a memory foam one. I have one and it's divine :D Be wary though, you have to spend a lot of money to get the benefits, a cheap one is just pants. Look after it and it will last you a life time.

Semi agree with this ... definitely go to some stores and try some different mattresses out, but if you then know the make and model of what you want then it may be cheaper to get it online.

Don't get to hard a mattress though ... that can cause all sorts of issues ...
 
I got a new bed a few months back, only a single though. I got a pocket sprung with memory foam top... very comfy. Can get a little hot at times though because the foam on top doesn't give very good air circulation, so I’d probably avoid a mainly foam mattress when your looking; also they can get a little pricey.
 
In the two houses I regularly sleep, both have Ikea mattresses, one of which was very expensive. They are truly hideous, for me at least. I would rather (and have) sleep on on the floor.

I bought my mother a new mattress as she had a bad back. Went to a dedicated store, made her try them all and then bought it online. She has one of those ones that you can put a cup of tea on and get on/off and it won't spill.

Exactly what this guy said.

My last 2 beds I've bought were from IKEA, one in 2005 when I was living in Canada and in late 2007 which I still use now. Cant stress how much how terrible they are compared to what you can get for similar money, I've learnt the hard way unfortunately and will never buy a bed or bed frame from IKEA again, more of a student/cheap frill thing imo.

None of it will break the bank, but they will all break within a year.

Ikea = worst quality ever.

From my experience, of a whopping 4 items bought from them, none survived the first year in a reasonable state. So I tend to stay clear these days

For me I would go round to a few shops, and have a try out. Take down the model numbers, then try to find the cheapest price online.

I have a very cheap one (£100 for a single on offer) and I think it's good. Doubtless not as good as an expensive one, but better than any mattress I've had before.
 
I paid an almighty £160 for a double mattress 4 years ago just after I move out of my mum's place.

Here's a tip - DON'T spend £160 on a mattress. It's a false economy. Mine was comfy for about 6 months, and is now pretty gash. My best mate spent about £500 on a mattress and it's about 1,943,873 times nicer than mine. Not that I've slept on it, just given it a lay down test is all. :o
 
I got my bed from benson for bed... got a memory foam one. In Bensons they rotate all their beds every 3 weeks so you will always find sale stock. Mine was reduced from £700 to £480 for king size.

On Memory foam beds - only get one if you are a "cold" sleeper... if you get hot easly in bed then dont get one as they really heat you up. If you like a walm bed then they are ideal.
 
Buy a slower bed than the one you want and overclock it. Its simple to do and saves loads of money.
