I need a van!

Never seen one yet that would struggle to get to 70 mate, and they all give pretty good MPG. What are you lot doing to them!.
:D
The top speed of the 1.9D Berlingo is 88 mph. I think it's more a case of "what have you been doing to them"!

I demand to see some proof a 1.9D Berlingo will do 88mph! I sat with my foot to the floor and it wouldnt nudge much past 70mph.

With such little power, a headwind and a slight incline would see even that top speed lowered :p

Get a Hearse and use one of those.
If you can fit a coffin and a whole heap of flowers and reefs in one im sure it will be big enough for what your mum needs it for

But the image is a pretty Great Barrier to overcome ;) (wreaths)

Small vans are quite pointless.

Small vans are great, cheaper than a similar spec car to insure, loads of hidden rear space from prying eyes.

Reasonable on fuel, the 1.8D escort my other brother bought yesterday should do around 45mpg, it's not quick by any stretch of the imagination but handles ok and has character.

It's his first car/van and it'll be fine for that, even i would buy and use one.(even had a couple years ago)

Nothing special but i like them and obviously he does so that's all that matters. Insurance did sway it a lot though :p

The fuel economy of my van is quite shocking.

In the Mondeo a full tank is about £50, that will get me 300-350miles of town driving.

The van has a smaller tank but because diesel costs more a full tank is about £45 and it seems to get the same range as the estate, 300-350miles.

I was expecting sort of 60MPG, 600-700miles per fuel tank. But no, It's just plain rubbish.

How is the space used and accessed? Why is the estate idea impractical?

You have the 1.7dti or di engined combo? Unless you're going for top speed runs it should do well on fuel, same engine as in my old company astra (the dti, di is sans intercooler) and that never went below 39mpg, mostly 41-43 with added weight in the boot and you know the way i drive. So there must be something wrong with yours??

It's a 1.3CDTi. The 1.7 apprently isn't so bad and will do 60mph in 2nd if needed.

I had a look at escort vans ages ago and was pretty shocked by the relatively small load space.

I am considering buying my own van at the moment, Sprinter, Vito, Transit and Transporter are on my short list.

Will probably end up with a transit due to running costs

Ah that might be why, small engine being worked hard all the time..

Sprinter's are great, the cdi versions are better on fuel, but still not the best, get a 316 lwb and chip it ;) should see approx 190bhp :D

Also have a look at the vw copy of the sprinter, vw's own engines but same inside and out pre facelift sprinter (floor mounted gearstick).

My astra couldn't do 60 in second and it should have the same box as fitted to the van

I havn't tried or witnessed that it can, it's just what a friend told me he can do in his combo van.

I imagine he's glorified it somewhat.

The one I had in Spain I managed 91MPH on the GPS going down a steep hill on the A7 toll road between Gibraltar and Marbella. It would do about 80mph on the flat (eventually), and about 65 up any significant incline.

There is no way you would get a 1.9D into 3 figures, unless it was being towed by something else.
