I suspect my on off case power switch is faulty as it's sticking and I can no longer power up my PC. Is there any way of testing it such as making contact with the two wires? I have not a clue when it comes to electronics so would someone advise me as to what type of switch should I order. I do not mind having it sitting outside the case as it's only my old ugly secondary PC.

At its most basic, you should be able to dismantle some of the plastic trim on the case or switch to get closer to the actual microswitch. Its normally the trim or the channel in which the switch that gets fouled or damaged, causing sticking.

You should be able to start the PC by shorting the power switch pins on the motherboard, something like an insulated/rubber handled screwdriver would do as you only need to touch them briefly. :)
