I need help sorting my life out! Career in IT.

It's not always that easy. Some organisations are perfect for 'working for way up', others not so.

Nobody is twisting your arm to stay in the one company, I'm in my third having worked my way up the ladder by getting experience at each then moving on if I can't go up the ladder internally.

I was in the same boat a year and a half ago, Alfie. I'd always been into PCs, worked in and maintained an internet cafe for a few years, but couldn't get a support role, or even an interview, due to lacking relevant experience. After passing a few exams - comptia and mcp - the interviews slowly started to come and eventually I landed job in a tiny IT consultancy doing 1st/2nd line support (which is industry speak for tea boy and answering the phone). As people have said, qualifications aren't much use without experience to back them up, but for me at least it was the difference between getting an interview and not. They look good on your CV and will give you something to talk about - I was one of the few applicants that could talk about networking and active directory basics and got the job as a result.

As for support being dull, I suspect this depends entirely on where you're working. My first six months was a crazy learning curve of getting to grips with active directory, exchange, firewalls and vpns, while revising for more MS exams. It was anything but boring. Scary is more like it!

Good luck :)
