Because i would question a large gap in a young persons work history? Seriously?? lmao
Because you assume someone who travels is a 'gypsy hipster socialist idiot'. Rather be well travelled than someone like you who probably never left the UK. What a sad life you must have.

Unexplained gaps worry me, travel after graduation wouldn't. Worry is perhaps too strong a word, but I don't like reading a CV and having to scratch my head trying to interpret the lineage, I basically want a full easy to understand timeline from when they finished education until now.

If somebody was travelling for a period i would take that in to account, and probably not hire them because they are more likely to be one of those gypsy hipster socialist idiots from the inbetweeners movie.

Isn't this technically discrimination?

Whilst I appreciate terleys comments were satire. I would argue from personal experience that travelling extensively like that massively opens up your mind and acceptance/appreciation of other cultures, meaning they can contribute more than the average joe, depending on the business model and culture...usually anyway. :p

I'm not sure it is a huge advantage for someone to have shagged a few hookers Thailand and gone on the lash for a few months while touring Australia - I guess perhaps they're preferable to someone who has never ventured further than Benidorm.

Anyway, this does spring to mind:

But on a serious note - if someone has volunteered for some project with a charity/non-profit org or taught English as a foreign language etc.. as a part of their gap year then that sort of thing is pretty cool and definitely a plus point on the CV.

Hence my point of "usually" :p

I traveled a lot for 9 months straight. Didn't spend it partying or shacking up with hookers either. Immersing myself in local cultures was my thing. I'm a better person with a broader perception of others for it :)

Multiple reasons really, as a young person you are expected to be studying or working if you are 18+..

Not everyone is so poor that they need to do that thankfully.

This sort of nonsense makes me glad my references imply I have been in continuous full time employment since uni. :D
