Hi,

I have never used any Firewall, anti spy ware and anti virus programs.
I am on my fourth PC, just finished building it last December. Top of the line, Q6600 running at 3.6 GHZ, 8800 ultra, 4 gig mem, pc power&cooling 750psu etc. In my PC career I have never used any programs to protect my PC. In my latest XP and VISTA installations I have disabled all unnecessary services.
My VISTA configuration runs with 23 processes at start-up. Never crashed once. I use the PC for gaming only, online mostly. No blue screen. Everything rock stable.
14400 in 3dmark 06.
Never had any viruses or spyware. Instead I keep track on what is happening in my processes task bar.
So, tell me why do I need any protection ;)

Hey,

No bragging post, instead I hope someone can convince my to install protection programs ;)
Just want to squeeze as much power out of my system, and I believe that Firewall, and antivirus will degrade performance while running.

Maybe only lucky so far or is the Virus threat slightly exaggerated ?

Hardly going to notice a firewall or AV sapping your performance on a modern comp. Your choice at the end of the day.

A lot of it also depends upon how you are connected to the Internet and also where you go.

Also if you aren't downloading and installing apps from Net then pretty unlikely to get hit.

I use Windows Firewall and a NAT router but I don't use anti-spyware or AV. It depends on your browsing habbits and what you do, if you're careful you don't need them. Now on my parents computers they have everything because they don't always know what they are doing.

LOL @ the people amazed that he hasn't been infected with anything yet.

Not everyone visits black background web pages all day using IE6...

Last time I used some AV software was in the 1990's. Only had to disinfect my PC once but it was fun and more rewarding doing it myself because according to Google no AV could disinfect this particular rootkit type nasty anyway...

Nothing better than disinfecting something where the "Manual disinfection instructions" section on every major and minor AV website is blank... and where all obvious attempts at messing with it simply cause it to automatically replace what you've just edited/removed in the Registry. Hmm yes :) Remember that day well. Very good fun when you find its weakness :D (which turned out to be setting the NTFS Security for its main DLL files to prevent the SYSTEM account accessing them... then they wouldn't get loaded by winlogon.exe at bootup... then I could delete its Registry crap and its files... TOAST!)

i'm saying you seriously need to get out and see more of the world, or at least get outdoors a bit more, if you "know exaclty how many processes and how much memory is used at start up"

I'd run a software firewall simply to monitor your outbound connections and to see what's accessing the internet and what is sending data home. The default windows firewall doesn't allow this - but I Sygate personal (which is free) does.

I've always used a low resource anti-virus (sophos, avg etc). Never had active scanning enabled but I do update and scan once a month. I've never found anything and while not all viruses do appear there, I've always made a point of knowing exactly what each and every process that's running is and does.

I've never used a firewall on PCs but the entire network is behind FreeBSDs IPFW, one of the most robust firewalls in existence. :)

Firewalls and AVs are like condoms. If you careful and make sure that everyone you sleep with are trusted and clean then it's unlikely that you'll get an STD. But if you're promiscuous and sleep with anyone you find then don't be surprised if it burns while you pee.

I've had an AV installed for years, but I've not actually had anything detected for years either. Do I need it? Probably not, but it's that one time when that cute girl looks respectable but is actually rather slutty that you need to be weary of, in which case it's always prudent to be protected.

Burnsy

Get an AV and set it so it runs once a week to keep track of things on your PC, you don't need it running in the background, it helps slightly to have some form of resident protection, but its not vital. An AV is handy just as a double check every so often i find :) I turn most of its fluff off though, i don't want script protection or it scanning files everytime i try to access them, this annoys me...

Best. Analogy. Ever.
