I need some advice.

Yes. The two main reasons I decided against the army were:

1. Somewhat of a pacifist so I find it hard to justify being part of such an organisation.

2. I want to experience life outside the confines of the army first. I want to do and enjoy things on my own terms. I would like to be able to drive my own car and come home to my own place and do what I want, rather than being at the mercy of the institution.

Take it from an old soldier, right now is not the time to join the armed forces.

As much as I loved being a Marine, it isn't for everyone and from what you have said so far, it would be far too restrictive an environment for you right now I think.

That is besides the inherent danger (as I can attest) currently due to our foreign policies.

Join the RAF then :p

Though by the sounds of it, this is also not for you.

I was in a very simliar position to yourself not so long ago, I joined up. Looking back, best thing I've done. Got away from where I stayed, better job, better money, they pay you to do anything you want(within reason). But its not for everyone.

Can't say it's something I've considered. Any further information?

Best place to start would be here, which provides links to training organisations, shipping lines and so forth. It would be a Cadetship however, you'd be paid or sponsored to train for 3 years, spending spells at college and sea, before qualifying. However, you mentioned earlier that you'd like to come home to your own place and so forth, you may not find it to your taste, especially as you could spend months at a time at sea depending on where you end up (cruise ships, tankers, container vessels etc..)

I'm currently in the process of applying for an engineering Cadetship, so if you have any further questions I'd be happy to answer them.

This is also worth a watch too
